Founded by G. Viswanathan, VIT University, formerly called Vellore Engineering College, is an Indian institute of higher education which offers 20 undergraduate, 34 postgraduate, 4 integrated and 4 research programs. It was founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College.

It’s a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act. The university draws students from 50 countries as well as from every state in India. It has campuses both at Vellore and Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. VIT University has consistently been ranked among the top ten engineering institutions in India by several top magazine including India Today among Top Private Universities in India 2015. The placement record of the University is quite satisfactory.

In 2015, for the first time, five IT majors - Cognizant, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, and Accenture - together have made 7,947 offers at VIT University. Cognizant which gave offers to 1,914 students had a previous high of 1,911. IT bellwether TCS has given 1,864 offers (1755) and Infosys 1,456 letters (1,452).Around 4,000 students sat for the campus interview.

The college was initially affiliated with Madras University. In 1999, Vellore Engineering College was awarded the ISO 9002 certificate for three years by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) of the Netherlands, making VEC the first educational institute in India to achieve this recognition. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), United Kingdom and the Energy Institute, United Kingdom have audited the teaching-learning processes at VIT and accredited the programs in 2004, with the highest validity of five years. Admission is conducted on merit basis only, through online entrance exam conducted over a span of 20 days.

VIT organizes its own entrance exam Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE, pronounced as witty). The university is among the first in India to implement the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) which gives the students flexibility to make their own time table by choosing the subjects and the faculties under whose guidance they want to study. This leads to increase in the students' academic performance and gives good learning experiences.

While IIT-Madras, Chennai tops the list of institutions in the State with the highest number of research papers indexed by the database, VIT University is a close 2nd. On the nationwide level VIT University is ranked 4th, placing it ahead of IIT Delhi and Bombay, with Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore ranked first. The application forms for VITEE are on a roll and if students are looking for best in Engineering, VIT is definitely the best one to enroll.
