How IIMs Calculate CAT Composite Score?
For admission to their MBA courses, IIMs calculate a composite score that takes into account several parameters beyond just the CAT score. The composite score reflects an overall evaluation of your profile. It's worth noting that even if two candidates have the same CAT score, their composite scores may differ due to differences in these parameters. Ultimately, the composite score is a comprehensive measure of your potential for success in the IIM program. Here are the parameters that are considered while drawing a composite score:
- Class 10th Marks
- Class 12th Marks
- Graduation Percentage/ Grade
- Work Experience
- Academic Background
- Gender Diversity
The formula for calculating the CAT composite score used by the IIMs is as follows:
Component | Description | Weightage (Typical Range) | How It Is Calculated |
|---|---|---|---|
CAT Score | Candidate’s scaled score in the CAT exam. | 25% – 60% (varies by IIM/college) | (Scaled CAT Score ÷ Maximum Scaled Score) × Component Weightage |
Class 10 Marks | Percentage scored in 10th standard. | 5% – 10% | (Your % ÷ 100) × Weightage |
Class 12 Marks | Percentage scored in the 12th standard. | 5% – 15% | (Your % ÷ 100) × Weightage |
Graduation Marks | Aggregate % or CGPA converted to %. | 5% – 20% | (Your % ÷ 100) × Weightage |
Work Experience | Relevant full-time work experience (in months). | 5% – 10% | Points awarded as per experience bracket; then normalized to weightage. |
Gender Diversity | Bonus points for female/transgender candidates. | 2% – 5% | Fixed points added to composite score. |
Academic Diversity | Points for a non-engineering background. | 2% – 5% | Fixed points awarded based on discipline. |
WAT Score (if applicable) | Written Ability Test score. | 10% – 15% | (WAT Score ÷ Total WAT Marks) × Weightage |
PI Score | Personal Interview performance. | 20% – 40% | (PI Score ÷ Total PI Marks) × Weightage |
Overall Composite Score | Final score used for selection and merit list. | 100% combined | Sum of all weighted components after normalization. |
