Most Commonly Question Asked

Can I get into Anna University with 190 marks?
With 190 marks, OC candidates cannot secure seats at the main CEG or MIT campuses. However, this score easily fetches seats in top affiliated tier-2 government or private colleges for highly sought-after branches like CSE and ECE.
Are cutoffs lower for self-supporting branches at Anna University?
Yes, Self-Supporting (SS) branches generally have a marginally lower cutoff than regular aided programs. At CEG, the difference is usually between 0.5 to 1 mark, providing a slight advantage for students willing to pay higher tuition fees.

How is Anna University TNEA Cutoff 2025 Calculated?

Anna University does not hold a separate entrance exam for B.E. and B.Tech admissions. The TNEA cutoff is based entirely on Class 12 (Higher Secondary) board marks in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry, normalised to a score out of 200 using the formula below. DoTE releases a normalisation table to standardise marks across different state and central boards.

TNEA Cutoff Formula

For standard board exams where each subject is marked out of 100, the formula is:

TNEA Cutoff = Mathematics + (Physics/2) + (Chemistry/2)

Here is how the weightage is distributed:

  • Mathematics: Carries the highest weightage. Your full mark (out of 100) is taken as it is.
  • Physics: Your mark is divided by 2 (scaled to a maximum of 50).
  • Chemistry: Your mark is divided by 2 (scaled to a maximum of 50).

Step-by-Step TNEA Cutoff Calculation

Let's assume you scored the following marks in your 12th board exams (out of 100):

  • Mathematics: 96
  • Physics: 92
  • Chemistry: 88

Step 1: Take your full Mathematics mark = 96

Step 2: Halve your Physics mark = 92/2 = 46

Step 3: Halve your Chemistry mark =88/2 = 44

Step 4: Add them together = 96 + 46 + 44 = 186

Your total TNEA cutoff score would be 186 out of 200.

Note: If your board exam marks are out of a different total, such as 200 for state board exams in the past, they are first scaled down to 100 before applying this formula.

Factors Affecting Anna University Cutoff 2025

The TNEA cutoff at Anna University shifts every year based on several academic and administrative variables. In 2025, the cutoff for top branches was broadly higher compared to 2024, driven by a combination of the following factors:

  • Total applicant pool: Over 1.8 lakh students registered for TNEA 2025, an approximately 8% rise over 2024. More applicants competing for the same seats pushes cutoffs upward.
  • Number of 200-scorers: In 2024, over 65 students scored a perfect 200 out of 200 in TNEA. In 2025, this number climbed, tightening competition at the very top.
  • Branch demand patterns: AI-adjacent branches (CSE, IT, ECE) continued to attract the highest demand, while core branches like Mechanical and Civil saw moderate increases.
  • Category-wise seat distribution: Tamil Nadu's reservation policy allocates approximately 69% of seats to BC, MBC, SC, ST, and other reserved categories. This directly shapes category-wise closing marks.
  • Number of participating seats: CEG campus has approximately 1,200+ seats across all branches. Any change in sanctioned intake affects the cutoff.
  • Normalisation formula: Board exam mark normalisation by DOTE ensures marks from different boards (CBSE, ISCE, State Board) are compared equitably — changes in board difficulty patterns indirectly influence the cutoff distribution.

No, Anna University admissions are offered on the basis of entrance exam scores followed by a counselling process. For admission to B.Tech courses, you have to register for TNEA counselling. For Anna University admissions to PG courses such as M.Tech and MBA, you have to appear and qualify in CEETA-PG and TANCET, respectively.
