Step 1: Understanding IIT JEE To Prepare

IIT JEE, or the Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination, is a prestigious national-level engineering entrance exam conducted for admission to various undergraduate engineering programs in India. The exam comprises two stages: JEE Main and JEE Advanced

IIT JEE Main serves as the preliminary stage for admission to undergraduate engineering programs at NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), and institutions/ universities funded or recognized by participating State Governments. IIT JEE Advanced is the second stage and is conducted for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad. Only candidates who qualify IIT JEE Main and rank among the top performers are eligible to appear for IIT JEE Advanced.

Both of these tests are computer-based, and test aspirants’ knowledge in maths, physics, and chemistry taught in 11th and 12th grade in India. IIT JEE Main is conducted twice a year, while IIT JEE Advanced is conducted once a year.

Start Your IIT Preparation From Zero: Don’t’s

  • Avoid dopamine spikes:
    • Objects that give immediate gratification but distract the student from studies such as junk foods and phone usage must be avoided at all costs.
  • Poor Resources:
    • An exam like IIT JEE is a difficult and extremely competitive one. You must use GOOD resources such as well-reviewed and recommended reference books and coaching classes, if necessary.
  • No Periodic Revision
    • An exam as difficult and competitive as JEE Mains requires in-depth knowledge of a lot of syllabus, which is why periodic revisions of all that you’ve learnt prior is necessary. At the end of the week, revise everything you have already practiced before moving on to a new topic. Before the class begins a new topic or chapter, take about 20 minutes to revise what you have already done in the previous one. Do this regularly and thoroughly.
  • Missing homework and classes
    • One of the biggest mistakes any student can make is forgoing regular classes in favour of self-study. Regular classes give you the discipline to study every day and a space to discuss doubts.
  • Forgoing Sleep
    • In times of stress, with high expectations and a mountain of syllabus upon you, many students choose to give up a healthy sleeping schedule for late night study sessions. Do not make this mistake, especially on the days before exams. Get at least 6 hours of sleep to give every exam with a fresh and awakened mind.
  • Don't Procrastinate:
    • Procrastination can be detrimental to your preparation. Avoid delaying tasks and stick to your study schedule.
  • Don't Ignore Basics:
    • Ensure a strong foundation by not neglecting basic concepts. Advanced topics often build upon fundamental principles.
  • Don't Rely Solely on Shortcuts:
    • While shortcuts can be helpful, don't rely on them exclusively. Understanding the underlying concepts is essential for solving complex problems.
  • Don't Skip Topics:
    • Resist the temptation to skip certain topics, even if you find them challenging. A well-rounded preparation is key.
  • Don't Overburden Yourself:
    • Avoid overloading your study schedule. Balance is crucial for effective learning, and burnout can be counterproductive.
  • Don't Isolate Yourself:
    • While focused study is important, complete isolation from peers can lead to a lack of perspective. Engage in discussions and group studies.
  • Don't Compare Excessively:
    • While healthy competition can be motivating, excessive comparison with peers may lead to unnecessary stress. Focus on your progress.
