What is JEE Main and JEE Advanced: JEE Main exam is conducted every year in two sessions by the National Testing Agency for admission into undergraduate courses in engineering, architecture and planning streams. While JEE Advanced is conducted each year by the various IITs on a rotational basis. Candidates who qualify the JEE Main exam can also appear for the JEE Advanced examination. What is the IIT JEE Exam?

IIT JEE is a national level engineering entrance exam consisting of two stages namely JEE Main & JEE Advanced. JEE Main acts as a screening exam to select the candidates who will be eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced exam, which will serve as the final exam to select candidates for admission across prestigious IITs. Every year, the IITs conduct a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) to select candidates for the 4-year B.Tech, B.Pharm, 5-year B.Arch, Integrated M.Sc. and M.Tech courses.

  JEE Main vs JEE Advanced

Although JEE Main and Advanced are related to one another, it is impossible to overlook their distinctions. It is critical that students understand the distinctions between these two examinations. Candidates who successfully qualify JEE Main examination with a good percentile and a rank of less than 2,50,000 are eligible to sit for the JEE Advanced examination. Every student can apply for the JEE Main exam as many times as required since there is no limit on the number of attempts. However, for the JEE Advanced exam, candidates can apply a maximum of two times in two consecutive years. JEE Main Exam is conducted two times a year. The two sessions of JEE Main are conducted in January and April.

JEE Advanced is conducted only one time a year.

With the help of JEE Main exam candidates can get admission to NITs, IIITs, and other government and private institutes.

With the help of JEE Advanced, candidates can get admission to top IITs, IISTs  and RGIPTs.

Candidates can appear for JEE Main for a maximum of three consecutive years.

Candidates can appear for the JEE Advanced exam two times in two consecutive years.

The total time for JEE Main exam is three hours (180 minutes)

The total time for the JEE Advanced Exam is 6 hours. It is conducted in two shifts.

The question paper for the JEE Main is available in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Assamese, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

Only Hindi and English versions of the JEE Advanced question paper are available.

Candidates must have cleared their Class XII boards with Physics, Maths and Chemistry as their main subjects.

Candidates must have cleared the JEE Main exam to be eligible for JEE Advanced.

There are no ranking criteria for JEE Main. However, candidates must score an aggregate of 50% in their 12th grade.

Candidates must rank under the top 2 lakh 50 thousand to be eligible.

The JEE Main Paper is divided into two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. 

  • Paper 1 (B.Tech/BE) is administered online (Computer Based Examination). 
  • Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning) is only available in offline mode (pen and paper-based examination).

The JEE Advanced Exam consists of two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. The JEE Advanced exam is only available online (Computer Based Examination).

There are no age limits for the JEE Main exam.

Candidates appearing for the JEE Advanced Exam must be born on or after October 1, 1998 to be eligible. However, there is a five-year relaxation for SC, ST, and PwD categories.

JEE Main vs JEE Advanced Selection Process 

The JEE Main entrance exam is conducted for providing admission to eligible candidates across IITs, NITs and IIITs. The IIT JEE exam including the JEEMain Test as well as the JEE Advanced Test assesses problem solving skills in basic science subjects - Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for the duration of 3 hours. Only the Top 2,50,000 candidates (including all categories) based on performance in the  JEE Main exam will qualify to appear for the JEE Advanced exam which will rank candidates for admissions into IITs, provided the candidates are among the top 20% high scorers of their respective boards in class XII examination.

JEE Main vs JEE Advanced Number of Attempts

  • The maximum number of attempts each candidate can make for the JEE Main and the JEE Advanced exam is different.  
  • Candidates can appear for the JEE Main exam thrice. Attempting the two sessions of the same year is counted as one. 
  • On the other hand, candidates can appear for the JEE Advanced exam only twice in consecutive years.

The JEE Main and the JEE Advanced exam are two national-level engineering entrance exams.
