Milind College of Science - MCS

People's Education Society’s college and High School named as Milind Mahavidyalaya and Milind Vidyalaya in 1955 respectively. In the year 1955, the college was christened as ‘Milind Mahavidyalaya’ and the campus as ‘Nagsen Vana’ by Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar. He believed that names speak big and loud in social context for they can be the source of inspiration. In one of his lectures addressed to the members of the “Bodhi Mandal” which functioned under the chairmanship of Shri.M.B.Chitnis, he related. There is a purpose behind giving this name as ‘Milind’. Milind was a Greek king of Bactria. He prided himself for his great learning. He felt that there were no learned people like the Greeks in any part of the world. King Milind was puffed with pride. He called people to argue with him. His challenge was to the world. Once he felt that he should have disputation with a Buddhist Monk, but nobody came forward to accept the challenge. In fact King Milind was neither a philosopher nor a man of learning. He knew only the art of governance. The Buddhists felt sorry and ashamed that nobody from among them was prepared to argue with him. With a great persuasion Bhikku Nagsen was made to accept the challenge of the King without considering the outcome of the arguments.Nagsen was a Brahmin. He had left his parental home at the age of seven. He had assiduously attained knowledge. He was a great, learned man.The disputation between the two lasted long. There is a book incorporating their arguments. In Pali the book is known as ‘Milind Panha’. Its Marathi translation is ‘Milind Prashna’. I wish the book be read by both teachers and students. In it is stated what qualities teachers and students should have . For this reason I have named this college as ‘Milind’ and campus as ‘Nagsenvana’. Milind was defeated in argumentation. He became a Buddhist. But I have named this college as Milind not because the king was defeated. I like the king Milind because he symbolises “intellectual honesty”. All should keep this ideal before them. It is really worth emulating King Milind is ideal as a student and Nagsen as a teacher. It is not proper to name an institution after a name of a great donor of money. I have sacrificed much for this institution but I haven’t given the name of a person to this institution. My name could also have been ideal. I have to keep before teachers and students an ideal of Milind. Milind Mahavidyalaya is a centre for culture where minds are influenced for benevolent cause. From it only a cultured student will pass out.
