'MBA after MBBS????' asked my colleague when I introduced her to the topic. Going for a management degree after MBBS seems a weird idea at first glance but it has its benefits and provides a unique edge to a medical professional over other PG options in medicine.

How to Pursue MBA After MBBS

Medical education is one stream that lacks variety when it comes to the big question of 'What's next?' as is the case with many other streams of education in India. Students who have completed an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degree are often compelled to take up an MD (Doctor of Medicine) course.

MD is a good choice of postgraduate course for doctors and allows them to specialize in the field of their choice. Still, there are plenty of higher studies options after MBBS that remain unexplored by thousands of MBBS graduates. MBBS graduates also find themselves out of options if they want to switch fields but the trend is changing as an increasing number of medical professionals are now opting for an MBA (Master of Business Administration) course.

An MBA is not the most obvious choice for a professional pursuing a career as a Doctor. Many might even consider it weird to go for an MBA after MBBS but we just prefer to call it 'unconventional'. If you have decided to go for an MBA after MBBS and joining an MBA college in India, it becomes important to weigh your options carefully and do extensive research about the subject before you take the leap.

Why Pursue an MBA after MBBS?

This is the first question you need to ask yourself. Why even go for an MBA after MBBS? Is an MBA degree worth it after you have spent 5.5 years completing a medical degree? Will pursuing an MBA after MBBS add value to your career? Different people may have different answers to these questions but here are a couple of reasons why you should go for an MBA after MBBS.

  • To explore career opportunities in the management of healthcare establishments.

  • To develop entrepreneurial skills.

  • To give your career a boost.

  • To avoid the intense competition at the level of PG medical courses.

  • The critical thinking and analytical skills developed during MBBS studies are beneficial in an MBA course.

Eligibility Criteria for MBA after MBBS

Candidates who are applying for MBA courses after MBBA must first ensure that they are eligible for the course. While the MBA eligibility criteria are common across most of the colleges, some colleges have specific requirements for their course. These may be related to work experience or marks in the qualifying degree. Here are the details of the eligibility criteria for MBA in India.

  • Candidates applying for an MBA course must have completed a graduate degree. An MBBS degree is considered valid for MBA admissions.
  • The college or university that has granted the MBBS degree must be recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Medical Council of India (MCI).

  • Most of the MBA colleges in India require applicants to have scored at least 45% - 50% aggregate marks in their graduate degree.

  • In addition, colleges also require candidates to have received a passing score in all of their graduation subjects.

  • Some MBA courses may require candidates to have certain years of work experience. This is especially true if you are going for a Part-Time MBA or an Executive MBA course.

  • Eligible candidates may also be required to qualify in an MBA entrance exam. Depending on the requirement specified by their college, candidates may have to appear for an exam such as CAT, CMAT, GMAT, XAT etc. Some MBA colleges also offer merit-based admissions on marks in graduation.

Candidates can also explore the option for direct MBA admission without entrance exams.

Colleges conduct their own selection processes for shortlisted candidates. In this, colleges may ask candidates to appear for a Written Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview. Check the related articles below for more details about the MBA selections and how to succeed.
