Marine engineering is a discipline of engineering concerned with the design and operation of mechanical equipment for seagoing vessels, ports and harbour infrastructure. A marine engineer’s primary responsibility is to design, construct and repair vehicles and structures that are utilised on or near water. Ships, aircraft carriers, submarines, sailboats, tankers and other vessels fall under this category.
Some of the major responsibilities of marine engineers are to work with experts during emergency breakdown and repair, oversee the delivery of fuel oil from a bunker station or barge to the ship, keeping records & planning maintenances and mechanical system monitoring and maintenance. Aside from the responsibilities listed above, a marine engineer aboard a ship is obliged to obey the chief engineer’s or the ship’s engine room department’s directions.
Various engineering institutions across the country offer several programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate level in this engineering discipline. 10+2 qualified candidates with at least 60% aggregate score and who had opted for the PCM subject group are eligible for admission. Both merit-based and entrance test-based admission process is available for admission into these marine engineering courses.
