CA Foundation 2026 Eligibility Criteria

ICAI sets the CA Foundation eligibility criteria, and candidates must fulfil all requirements before applying to avoid registration issues. To appear for the CA foundation 2026 exam, candidates must have passed Class 12 from a recognised board. Students who have completed Class 10 may register provisionally, with admission confirmed only after clearing their Class 12 examinations.

There is no age limit for the CA Foundation exam, students of any age can register as long as they meet the educational requirements. Additionally, candidates must complete a mandatory study period of four months from the date of enrollment. Those registering on or before January 1 are eligible for the May session, while those registering on or before July 1 can appear for the November session.

Certain candidates are exempt from the Foundation route entirely. Commerce graduates or post-graduates with 55% aggregate marks, and non-commerce graduates with at least 60% marks, can directly register for CA Intermediate 2026 without clearing the Foundation exam. Candidates are advised to verify their eligibility and registration status on the official ICAI Self-Service Portal at eservices.icai.org before filling out the application form.

Educational Qualifications Required for CA Foundation 2026

ICAI has prescribed clear educational qualifications that every candidate must meet before registering for the CA Foundation exam. Students who have passed Class 10 from a state or central government board, or an equivalent recognised examination, are eligible to register for the CA Foundation course on a provisional basis. This provisional admission is confirmed only after the candidate successfully clears their Class 12 examination.

Students who are currently appearing for their Class 12 exams, or have already passed, can also register for the CA Foundation. However, to be eligible to actually sit for the exam, candidates must have passed Class 12 with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks from a board recognised by the Government of India and accepted by ICAI.

CA Foundation Age Limit 2026

To have an idea of the maximum and minimum age criteria for the CA Foundation is extremely important. The ICAI has not specified any age limit for registering in the CA Foundation. This means candidates of any age can apply for the CA Foundation exam only if they meet all the CA Foundation eligibility criteria 2026. 

CA Foundation Nationality Requirements 2026

Before selecting a course, candidates must know the nationalities accepted. The CA Foundation nationality has been set by the ICAI and it is an important eligibility parameter. Indian nationals should have their names and date of birth as per their matriculation/ secondary examination certificate. If in case a foreign national seeks admission, they have to show their proof of nationality issued from an accepted government authority. 

Exemptions from CA Foundation 2026

The ICAI has prescribed certain exemptions in the CA Foundation eligibility criteria 2026. The exceptions are followed for only certain categories of students who do not have to appear for the CA Foundation exam. These candidates can register themselves for the second level which is the CA Intermediate course. Take a look at the candidates who are exempted from the CA Foundation:

• UG and PG Candidates: Candidates who have scored a minimum of 55% aggregate marks in graduation or post-graduation degree in the commerce stream from any recognised university will be exempted from the CA Foundation.
• NIOS Candidates: Aspirants who have passed their undergraduate or postgraduate degrees from an Open University do not have to appear for the CA Foundation exam.
• Non-commerce Candidates: Candidates who have obtained Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees in a stream other than commerce with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate from a recognised University and approved by the ICAI do not have to appear for the CA Foundation exam. 

CA Foundation Eligibility 2026 Accepted Board Equivalence

To appear for the CA Foundation, students need to pass their 10+2 conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India (or an examination recognised by the Central Government as equivalent thereto). CA Foundation 2026 Number of Attempts

The CA Foundation exam is conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) three times every year, in January, May, and September. It is the first and entry-level stage of the CA programme, designed to assess a candidate's foundational understanding of accounting, business law, quantitative aptitude, and business economics.

Once registered, a candidate's CA Foundation registration remains valid for four years, during which they can appear for up to eight attempts. Candidates who are unable to clear the exam within this period can continue by revalidating their registration upon expiry. Since there is no restriction on the number of attempts, students are encouraged to prepare thoroughly and attempt the exam with confidence.

Upon successfully clearing the CA Foundation, candidates progress to CA Intermediate and subsequently CA Final. Clearing all three levels earns the candidate membership of ICAI and the prestigious designation of a Chartered Accountant (CA), one of the most respected professional qualifications in India's finance and accounting industry.
