AILET 2021 Eligibility Criteria

National Law University, Delhi has specified certain conditions related to academic qualifications, age limit, category, pass percentage, etc. which candidates need to fulfil to be able to sit AILET 2021. If an AILET aspirant does not meet the below-mentioned criteria, he/she would not be eligible to appear for the exam. 

All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) is conducted by National Law University, Delhi for students seeking admission to BA LL.B, LL.M and PhD programmes. The online application form of AILET 2021 was released on January 15 which shall go on till June 30. All those who wish to appear for the exam this year must go through the detailed AILET eligibility criteria before applying for it. Given below is the category-wise eligibility criteria for AILET 2021 and other important information related to the eligibility for the exam.

  • Candidates must have qualified Senior Secondary School Examination (10+2 pattern) or Equivalent Examination with not less than 50% marks. 
  • The candidates appearing in the class 12 examination in March or April 2021 are also eligible to apply.
  • Total Number of Seats available for BA LL.B is 120 amongst which 110 Seats shall be selected on the basis of merit through All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) and 10 Seats will be available for direct admission to Foreign Nationals on the basis of merit (5 seats for Foreign Nationals & 5 seats for OCI/PIO). 
  • Foreign Nationals shall be exempted from AILET 2021. They can seek admission only if they have obtained 65% marks in the qualifying examination.
  • Candidates passing the qualifying examination from a recognized School/ College/ Institute located within the Delhi’s National Capital Territory (NCT) only will be eligible to apply for seats reserved for Delhi Region. For distance education students, if the centre of examination/study centre is located in the NCT of Delhi, the candidate will be considered under the Delhi Region and if the centre of examination/ study centre is located outside the Delhi region, he or she will be considered under the All India Level seats.
  • For eligibility on reserved seats of SC/ ST/ OBC/ EWS categories under Delhi NCT, the candidates must satisfy the conditions mentioned above and must also possess category or caste certificate issued by the competent authority of Government of Delhi. Certificate issued by any other authority will not be accepted for admission on these seats.

Note: One additional supernumerary seat shall be reserved for Kashmiri Migrants. Two additional supernumerary seats will be reserved for Residents of Jammu & Kashmir.

Keeping aside the Foreign National category, all the candidates must appear for the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) on the basis of which selection shall be done. 

To be eligible for admission to the LL.M programme, candidates must have passed the LL.B degree or equivalent with at least 55% marks in aggregate from a recognized university. Pass percentage for reserved candidates shall be 50% marks, i.e SC/ ST/ PWD.

Candidates appearing for the exams in the same year or awaiting results of the qualifying exam may also apply and take AILET 2021. The eligibility for such candidates shall be obtained by the last date which shall be notified along with the entrance test result notification. In case the candidate needs to appear for a compartment in the year of admission, he/she shall be treated ineligible. 

Eligibility for Foreign Nationals Candidates

They shall be exempted from taking the test. In case the OCI/PIO candidate applies under the category of Indian National, they have to appear in AILET 2021 along with other candidates.
Candidates must have secured not less than 55% marks or equivalent in LL.B or an equivalent degree recognised by the UGC or Association of Indian Universities.

Eligibility for Seats Reserved for Delhi Candidates

Candidates who have passed or are passing the qualifying examination from a recognised school/institute/college within the NCT of Delhi shall be held eligible to appear for AILET 2021. In case the school/institute/college falls outside the NCT of Delhi, the aspirant will be considered under the All India Level seats.  

Eligibility for Ph.D 

Check out the eligibility for admission to the doctoral programme:

  • The candidate must have obtained a Master's degree in Law (LL.M) or equivalent recognised by the statutory regulatory body with at least 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution approved by an authority established. The same may be incorporated under a law in his/her home country or any statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions. For those belonging to SC/ST/differently-abled candidates, 5% relaxation will be given as per the UGC regulations that are amended from time to time. 
  • The candidate who has a degree in law and qualified the Company Secretary examination organised by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and given the Associate Membership of the institute shall also be eligible.
  • Aspirants who have a degree in law and have passed the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) final exam will also be considered eligible for admission. 
  • If the candidate is a Judge of any State High Court of India with three years of experience or Judge of Supreme Court of India will also be eligible for PhD. 
  • 8 seats shall be given on the basis of merit through AILET 2021 and 2 seats will be given through direct admission to Foreign Nationals on merit of Research proposals evaluation.

I do not fulfil all the eligibility criteria prescribed by AILET. Can I still apply for the entrance exam?

Only candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria prescribed by NLU, Delhi can apply for AILET.

To apply for the BA LLB course through AILET, a woman candidate must score a minimum of 50% aggregate or its equivalent grade.

What is the age limit to apply for AILET?

There is no age limit to apply for AILET.

How much should I score in class 12th to apply for BA LLB programme through AILET?

To apply for the BA LLB course through AILET, an aspirant must have secured at least 50% marks in class 12th or its equivalent exam.

What is the minimum aggregate required to apply for the LLM course in AILET?

Candidates seeking admission in LLM through AILET must have qualified LLB or its equivalent degree with not less than 55% marks or equivalent grade.

Can I apply for the AILET UG Course after class 10th?

No, it is mandatory to complete at least class 12th to apply for AILET UG Course.

Can Foreign Nationals apply for AILET?

No, Foreign Nationals are exempted to appear for AILET. They can directly get admission in NLU Delhi on the basis of merit if they meet the eligibility criteria specified for them.

Am I eligible for AILET if I am yet to get my class 12th result?

Yes, students awaiting class 12th results can apply for AILET but they will have to provide the necessary proof required during the time of admission.
