GATE 2019 Eligibility Criteria

IIT Madras has set some conditions related to academic qualifications, pass percentage, age limit etc which applicants have to fulfill in order to be eligible for GATE exam. If an applicant fails to meet with any of the given eligibility conditions then he/she will be not allowed to appear for the exam or admission process. All the applicants are requested to check the GATE eligibility criteria before submitting the GATE 2019 Application Form.

GATE is a national-level postgraduate engineering entrance examination conducted for admission to Master of Engineering (M.E) or M.Tech programmes in various NITs, IITs, and other technical institutes. Every year, this entrance examination is organized jointly by the IISc, Bangalore and seven IITs in support of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE. The GATE 2019 will be held for 24 papers. Out of these, a candidate can appear only in any one GATE paper. The detailed eligibility criteria for GATE 2019 examination is elaborated below.

Eligibility Criteria for GATE 2019

Nationality:

  • Indian national candidates will be eligible for the exam.

  • Candidates belonging to Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Ethiopia and United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) will also be eligible to appear.

Age Limit:

  • There is no minimum or maximum age limit prescribed to appear for the examination.

Academic Details:

  • Only those candidates who have completed/will complete their Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or Master’s degree (M.Sc) in any relevant science subject from a recognised University or institution in 2019 will be eligible for GATE 2019.

  • There is no minimum percentage required at the undergraduate level for appearing in GATE 2019.

  • There is no limit on the number of attempts either. Hence, candidates who have appeared for GATE once earlier can appear again.

Documents Required in Support of Eligibility Criteria for GATE 2019

  • If a candidate has completed one of the qualifying examinations as mentioned- above in the table in 2018 or earlier, then he/she has to be submitted the degree certificate/provisional degree certificate/course completion certificate/membership certificate as issued by the society or institute.

  • If the candidate is expected to complete  one of the qualifying norms in 2019 or later as mentioned in the table above, then he/she had to upload their Provisional Certificate Letter (as issued by the Head of the Institute/Dean/Registrar/Head of Department) or a copy of marks card for Section A of AMIE, etc.

  • All the documents have to be uploaded only while filling the online application. It does not have to be sent by post.

  • Candidates with backlogs (failed subjects) in any of the subjects in their qualifying examination had to upload a copy of any of the mark sheet of the final year issued from the institute where he/she was studying.

Eligibility Criteria for Foreign Candidates for GATE 2019

  • Candidates who are still pursuing or have obtained a degree from countries except India in technology or engineering (at least four years) can apply. Final year candidates can also apply for GATE 2019.

  • Candidates who are pursuing or have obtained a postgraduate degree in any subject related to Science are also eligible to register for GATE 2019.

Important Note: Candidates who are pursuing or have obtained a higher degree other than the courses mentioned above must select the minimum qualifying degree while filling the application form for GATE 2019.

FAQs

1. I have passed my B-Tech successfully. I am pursuing M-Tech, can I apply for GATE?

Yes, you can. You need to mention the B.Tech details on your GATE Application Form.

2. Is the downloaded mark sheet from internet acceptable as an eligibility certificate?

Yes, internet downloaded final year mark sheet of any one semester, which is digitally signed or duly signed with seal by the competent authority (Registrar, Controller of Examination etc.) only, is acceptable.

3. I have passed in 2018 but I have a backlog. Can I apply for GATE? 

Yes, you can. You need to clear the backlog by August 2019 to be able to apply for admissions.

3. I have passed my degree in 2018. I don’t have my Degree certificate but I have Provisional Certificate. Will that be enough?

Yes, you can apply for GATE using any one of the following: Degree certificate / Provisional certificate/Course completion certificate / Professional certificate/Membership certificate issued by the society or institute.

4. Is there a restriction on the number of attempts in GATE 2019?

No, there is no restriction on the number of attempts.

5. Is there any age limit criterion defined under GATE eligibility?

Ans: No, there is no such criterion defined on age limit.

6. I have completed my Graduation through Distance Learning. Can I apply for GATE?

Yes, you can. There is no specification about the mode of learning (distance or open university) but the course must be recognised by AICTE for candidates to be eligible for admissions.

8. I have chosen category as OBC, but there is no option to upload the certificate. What to do?

The OBC Certificate is not required to be uploaded. OBC certificate is required only while taking admission using the GATE score.
