IIT JAM 2019 Exam Analysis

We are here to give you a detailed version of the IIT JAM 2019 Exam Analysis. IIT JAM 2019 was conducted by IIT Kharagpur across 65 cities in India on 10th February 2019. The exam was conducted in 2 sessions. The first session was conducted from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM for Biological Sciences (BL), Mathematics (MA) and Physics (PH). The second session from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM was conducted for Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG) and Mathematical Statistics (MS).

There were 3 sections in each paper just like the previous years -- MCQ or Multiple Choice Questions, MSQ or Multiple Selection Question and NAT or Numeric Answer Type Questions.

Student Reactions Post Exam

As per the students' reactions we received, the paper was overall easy. The Physics paper in IIT JAM was found to be easier as compared to last year’s exam. While talking about the section-wise difficulty level, students said that MCQ section questions had a moderate difficulty level. However, MSQ and NAT seemed easier than the previous year’s exam.

MCQ portion in the Geology paper gave a really hard time to the students. There MCQ section had questions that were never asked in the last 10 years. This situation led the majority of the students to perplexities and they did not attend most of the questions in Geology. NAT portion was lengthier than previous years and students said that they had difficulties to complete the paper on time. Geology exam in IIT JAM 2019 was disheartening to most of the students this year.

In the Chemistry exam of IIT JAM 2019, the Organic Chemistry portion of the paper was tougher. Also, in this case, the MCQ section was harder, which is not an exception with all the question sets of IIT JAM this year.

IIT JAM 2019 Question Paper Pattern & Marking Scheme

Section A: In the section, there is going to be 10 questions of 1 mark and 20 questions of 2 marks each. The question will be in MCQ format. This section is subject to negative marking for every wrong answer. ⅓ marks for every 1 mark and ⅔ marks for every 2 marks question will be deducted. Left blank questions will receive zero marks.

Section B: Section B comprises of Multiple-select questions. The format of these questions is the same as MCQs but unlike MCQs, there can be multiple answers for one question. Candidates must select multiple answers if required to secure 1 mark in each of 10 questions set.

Section C: This section contains 20 questions that are to be answered in Numerical Answer Type (NAT). From the section, there will be two question sets of 10 questions in each set. One set will have 10 questions of 1 marks and another with 10 questions of 2 marks.

Here is the table as per the sections with marking policies. Check this out to have a better understanding of your paper.

The JAM was conducted for the following 7 subjects:

1. Biological Sciences (BL)

2. Biotechnology (BT)

3. Chemistry (CY)

4. Geology (GG)

5. Mathematics (MA)

6. Mathematical Statistics (MS)

7. Physics (PH)

For the exam, candidates are forbidden to take any electronic objects such as calculators, mobile phones etc. The computer where the exam is conducted has a virtual electronic calculator inbuilt. The time limit of the exam is 3 hours and the computers automatically end the exams in the completion of 3 hours.

This JAM or Joint Admission Test is taken by many candidates every year in a computerised format for admission in IITs' M.Sc courses. Every year, different IIT institutes conduct the test jointly with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Higher study scopes like Ph.D. is also possible after completing IIT JAM. National Institute of Technology (NITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) are some of the other institutes that accept JAM scores apart from IITs.

IIT JAM 2018 Exam Analysis

IIT Bombay successfully conducted IIT JAM 2018 in online mode on 11th February 2018. From the latest updates that we have, IIT JAM Question Paper 2018 was almost similar and even easier as compared to IIT JAM 2017 paper. Out of the three sections, the NAT (Numerical Answer Type) turned out to be quite lengthy and time-consuming while there weren't any major surprises in the remaining sections. Although, the section on MSQ (Multiple Select Question) had some tricky questions.

In Mathematics, several unexpected questions appeared this time and questions from Mathematical Statistics (MS) were given priority. In Physics, the questions were a little tricky and were in the same number as that of the previous year. As expected, most of the questions from Biological Sciences (BL) involved images.

Overall, IIT JAM 2018 the question paper covered broad topics which gave test takers the chance to score well. While some aspirants performed well in NAT, others did well in MSQ and MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) sections. Therefore, the average marking and maximum marks would likely remain just like in the previous year.

IIT JAM 2018 is a national-level entrance exam, which is taken by aspirants for admission M.Sc and other post-bachelor courses offered at IITs and integrated Ph.D. courses offered at IISc Bangalore. IIT JAM scores are also accepted at several National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) for MSc admissions.

Conducted in online mode, IIT JAM is held for seven subjects (test papers) including Biological Sciences (BL), Chemistry (CY), Mathematics (MA), Geology (GG), Physics (PH), Biotechnology (BT) and Mathematical Statistics (MS).

Now that examination on February 11 2018, has been successfully conducted, candidates can check the IIT JAM exam analysis on this page. With the help of IIT JAM 2018 paper analysis, candidates would be able to get insights into the difficulty level of the exam as well as the weightage given to every topic in the paper.
