AIBE XVIII 2023 (Result Out)

AIBE results 2023 were announced by the BCI on March 26, 2024, at allindiabarexamination.com. Candidates must visit the official site, to check the result. The results are based on the final answer key, which was issued on March 21, 2024.

Before that the AIBE 2023 answer key was published on December 12 for all the sets - A, B, C, and D. The exam was held on December 10, 2023. The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is held to assess the legal knowledge and aptitude of law graduates in India. The questions asked in the exam are from topics like Constitutional law, the Indian Penal Code, Administration Law etc. The test is conducted in an offline mode across 50 Indian cities in national and regional languages. Those who clear the examination are awarded the 'Certificate of Practice' which makes them eligible to practise law in any court in India.

AIBE Conducting Body

The BCI (Bar Council of India) is the organising authority of AIBE, which conducts this exam to evaluate whether a law graduate has the required aptitude to practice law in the country or not. All India Bar Examination (AIBE) came into existence in 2010 when the Legal Education Committee and BCI members passed a notification regarding the examination. What is the AIBE Exam?

AIBE, short for the All India Bar Examination, is a national-level entrance exam organised by the Bar Council of India (BCI). All India Bar Examination is conducted to assess the capability of advocates who want to practise law in India. The candidates who want to appear for AIBE XVII 2023 must meet the eligibility criteria and have completed a 3-year LLB or 5-year Integrated LL.B programme. Until AIBE XV, the exam used to be an open-book test but it was changed from AIBE XVI onwards. 

Candidates can appear for the exam in 11 national languages: Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu. Appearing for AIBE is not mandatory for a law graduate, it is compulsory to qualify the exam to be eligible to practise law across the country. A law graduate can practise law in his / her own state even without taking AIBE. Post-qualifying the AIBE exam, the candidates will be awarded a “Certificate of Practice” to the candidates. The AIBE exam is conducted across around 53 exam centres in India.

AIBE Eligibility Criteria 2023

The minimum eligibility criteria of the AIBE exam is the set of academic and personal conditions and qualifications that one needs to satisfy to apply for the law exam. An applicant who does not meet the eligibility criteria of AIBE is not allowed to sit for the exam.

The application forms for AIBE are the registration forms that are released by the conducting body so that interested candidates can fill up and submit the required details as well as documents and confirm their candidature in the exam. How to Register for AIBE XVIII 2023?

The step-by-step instructions to register for the AIBE (18) 2023 examination are mentioned below.

  • Aspirants must visit the official website and read the instructions from there before filling up the application form. 
  • Next they must enter personal information like Name, Address, DOB, Contact details, Nationality, etc to fill out the application form.
  • They must select any one exam centre in which they are comfortable attempting the AIBE examination.
  • The candidates are required to submit documents like the advocate ID card (issued by the State Bar Council), enrolment certificate, scanned copy of photograph and signature, category certificate and disability certificate (if applicable). 
  • After the application form is submitted, they can check the email inbox to get the registration number and password. 
  • Candidates can pay the application fee through the payment method suggested. 
  • After payment, they can take a printout of the Challan and keep the candidate’s copies of the challan with them. 
  • After the payment is confirmed, the aspirants must upload the challan and provide the journal number, branch code and date of the challan. 
  • For future reference, aspirants must keep a hard copy of the application form.

AIBE Results 2023

The AIBE result 2023 is typically declared within 1-2 months after the exam is conducted. The result is not released in the form of marks or percentages, rather it shows the ‘Qualifying / Non-Qualifying’ status of the candidates. The qualified candidates get their ‘Certificate of Practice” if they clear the examination, with which they can practice law in any Indian Court.

AIBE Cutoff 2023

What is the full form of AIBE?

The full form of AIBE is the All India Bar Examination. After the result declaration, BCI publishes the list of the state bar councils for COP availability to AIBE-passed candidates. The candidates can contact their respective state bar councils to receive the COP. However, now BCI has enabled an online facility for downloading COP through a mobile app - AIBESCOPE. 

Who conducts AIBE?

AIBE is conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI). Yes, as per BCI regulations, the candidates who passed their LL.B degree from 2010 onwards, will now mandatorily clear the AIBE examination to practice law in India. The state bar councils also ensure that the enrolled lawyers appear for AIBE and pass the examination. If any enrolled lawyer fails to pass the bar examination then s/he is debarred from the councils/associations until s/he passes the exam.

What is the frequency of AIBE?

AIBE is conducted twice a year, in the months of May and September. Candidates who want to start their legal career need to appear for AIBE and get their ‘Certificate of Practice’. AIBE is a national-level exam conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) every year for law graduates who want to practice in a court of law. 

Has the schedule of AIBE 2022 been released?

No, the exam schedule of AIBE XVII is yet to be released. The exam is expected to be conducted in November/ December 2022 as indicated by the BCI. The Bar Council of India (BCI) will publish the AIBE XVII notification 2022 anytime soon. However, the syllabus has been published on the official website of BCI. 

Is AIBE conducted in an open book pattern?

No, AIBE is not an open book examination. In 2021, BCI changed the exam pattern and the candidates can no longer take the help of books and study material to write/ solve the question paper. Candidates were still allowed to carry Bare Acts without notes with them. However, from AIBE XVII, candidates will not be allowed to carry any reference material including Bare Acts.

In which languages can I take AIBE?

You can take the AIBE in 11 regional languages. They are Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu. The AIBE exam is being held twice a year for candidates who want to obtain a ‘Certificate of Practice’ to start their legal career. 

What is the mode of AIBE?

AIBE examination is held in the offline mode. Candidates need to take the exam in a pen-and-paper method. The questions asked in the examination are all MCQ-type questions. The number of attempts for the students to appear for AIBE is unlimited. Candidates can appear for the AIBE exam consecutively till they qualify it. 

What is the percentage of marks required to score by the candidates in order to pass AIBE?

The passing marks for AIBE are decided after the revised answer key for AIBE is published. However, it is set according to the minimum qualifying marks criteria decided by BCI for the bar examination, which is 40% marks for the General/ OBC category, and 35% marks for SC/ ST category.

What will happen if I fail the AIBE examination?

If a candidate fails to qualify AIBE exam, they will then have to appear for the next session of AIBE. Qualifying for the AIBE examination is necessary to practice law in India. The difficulty level of the AIBE exam is usually easy to moderate difficulty level. However, as BCI plans to make AIBE 2022 testing parameters stricter, therefore, candidates can expect it a bit tougher than in past years. 

Can final-year students appear for the AIBE examination?

Yes, the candidates appearing for their final year qualifying examination are allowed to appear for the AIBE exam. However, they must be registered with their respective state bar council before appearing for the AIBE examination.
