How to Apply for GATE 2019

The application process for GATE 2019 examination began on September 1, 2018 and ended on September 23, 2018. In order to apply for the exam, applicants have to register at GOAPS Website i.e. IIT Madras, which is the organising institute for GATE 2019, also allows candidates to make corrections in their application form. It is mandatory to check the eligibility criteria of GATE 2019 before applying for the exam as the application forms for ineligible candidates will be rejected.

The registration for GATE 2019 is done only through the official website, i.e., GATE Online Application Processing System or GOAPS. While filling the GATE 2019 application form, valid information about the personal, academic and contact details has to be submitted by the candidates. The required application fee also has to be paid through online mode. 

Premier and top technical institutes in India accept GATE score for admission to postgraduate and Ph.D. engineering programmes. 

Note: GATE score is mandatory to secure jobs in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

Documents Required for Filling GATE Application 2019

  • A Scanned copy of photograph and signature of the candidate.

  • Valid Photo ID such as Aadhaar Card/Passport/Driving License/PAN Card/Voter ID/College ID/Employee Identification Card/Notarized Affidavit with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address.

  • For foreign applicants required a Passport/ Govt. Issued ID/College ID/Employee ID will be the valid ID proofs.

  • Degree Certificate/Provisional Certificate/Course Completion Certificate.

  • Copy of Mark Sheet of the 5th /6th /7th semester.

  • Final year students must submit Provisional Certificate Letter as per format issued by the Home of Institute/Dean/Registrar/Head of Dept.

  • Candidates in final year of AMIE have to submit their mark sheet for Section A of AMIE in case of professional equivalent qualifications.

  • Caste Certificate (if applicable) as per given format.

  • Disability or PwD Certificate (if applicable).

  • Candidates pursuing a higher degree or masters have to submit the qualifying degree certificate.

  • Candidates with backlogs have to upload a copy of the mark sheet of the final year issued by the institute where they are studying.

  • Net banking/credit card/debit card details for payment of the fee.

Step by Step Process to Apply for GATE 2019

In order to apply for GATE 2019, candidates will have to follow certain steps if they want to complete the entire process in a systematic and correct manner. The registration process for GATE 2019 involves the following stages: Registration,  GOAPS Password, GOAPS Enrolment ID,  Application Filling and Uploading Images and Supporting Documents, Online Fee Payment etc.

Step1: Registration through GOAPS:

  • Visit the official website of GATE.

  • Register as “New User” and proceed as mentioned in the guide. 

  • After successful registration, they will get access to GOAPS with the credentials they entered such name, valid email ID and mobile number.

  • International candidates must note that any contact with the candidate will be done only through the provided e-mail ID.

Note: The email ID and mobile number submitted must be valid in nature because all communication related to the examination will be sent through this medium.

  • After providing all details like a valid email address, mobile number and a GOAPS password of their choice.

GOAPS Password:

  • While creating the password, the applicants must note that they should create the password, which cannot be guessed easily.

  • It is advisable for applicants not to use their name, date of birth or easily guessable string of alphabets or numbers.

  • Try creating a password that has numbers, alphabets and special characters.

  • Confirm the registration.

GOAPS Enrolment ID:

  • After the successful registration, the candidates receive an email that contains the GOAPS Enrolment ID.

  • The Enrolment ID is necessary to log in for filling the online application form for GATE 2019.

Step 2: Filling GATE 2019 Application Process:

  • Next, applicants had to fill the application form of GATE 2019 with Personal information including Name, Date of Birth and other requisite information,

  • Click on 'Start the GATE 2019 Application Process' tab.

  • Personal Details: Name,Date of Birth, Gender, Nationality, Category, A person with Disability Status and Dyslexia Status, Country of Permanent Residence, State/Union Territory, Select ID Proof and Enter ID Proof Number, Name of Parent/Guardian (stick to the specifications) ,Country of Residence of Parent/Guardian, Mobile Number of Parent/Guardian etc.

    •  Address details for communication purpose (PIN code mandatory)

  • Eligibility details, i.e. previous education details: Name of the college where the candidate had completed UG degree. The candidates must also specify the address of the college along with PIN code.

    • Before filling the application form, the candidates must have clarity on the GATE paper and examination center.

Step 3: Uploading of Scanned Documents :

In this step, candidates have to upload their scanned recent photograph, signature and other documents (if required) according to the specifications mentioned by the exam conducting authorities. 

  • High quality scanned image (JPEG format) of photograph and signature.

  • Thumb impression as per the specified requirements.

  • Scanned images (JPEG format) of degree certificates/ mark sheets

  • Scanned copy of category certificate (if applicable) in PDF format.

Maximum Resolution: 480 x 640 pixels

Minimum Resolution: 240 x 320 pixels



Maximum Resolution: 160 x 560 pixels

Minimum Resolution: 80 x 280 pixels


After uploading the documents, read the declaration and click on the ' checkbox' to proceed to the fee payment.

Step 4: Preview of Application Form:

  • Before proceeding to online fee payment, the server displays the preview of GATE 2019 application form.

  • No changes are allowed once candidates click on ‘Confirm and Final Submit’ button.

  • All candidates were advised to thoroughly check their submitted information for any mistakes.

  • Click on “Confirm and Submit”.

Step 5: Payment of Fees:

  • The payment of fees had to be done through online mode such as net banking/debit card/credit card. 

  • After the payment was done, the candidates were redirected to the GOAPS website. 

  • The details for the application fee are given below.

Note: The Application Fee of GATE 2019 varies for Indian nationals and International candidates.

Step 6: Submission of Application Form 2019 :

  • After payment, the application form of GATE 2019 was successfully submitted through GOAPS.

  • Download it and take a print out of the filled application form and keep it for your own reference.

GATE 2019 Online Application Correction

The GATE 2019 Application correction window for registered candidates is available from 27th September 2018 in online mode. However, not all information is open for changes. The last date for correcting the mistakes in GATE 2019 Application Form is 25th October 2018. In order to make changes, candidates must send an email to their respective zonal office. The following details can be edited before paying the application fee-

  • Communication Address, Academic Details, Date of Birth, Gender and Category can be corrected.

  • The correct document defining the category status can also be.

The following changes that cannot be made in the submitted GATE Application Form:

  • The E-mail Id mentioned by the candidate

  • Phone Number is given by the candidate

  • Paper for attending GATE 2019.

Since the details mentioned-above cannot be edited, in case the mistake is made then applicant have to re-apply for GATE 2019 with a new E-mail ID and Phone Number. It must be noted that the previous application fee will not be refunded.

GATE 2019 Correction of Exam Centers

Candidates applying for GATE 2019 must also know that they can now change the exam city and appear at the center that suits them. This process can be done once the Application Procedure is complete and processed for further proceedings of GATE 2019. The provisions for the same has started and the ones interested can now make the relevant changes. The test takers can download the form released by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras for making the changes in the exam city. A requisite amount is also to be paid along with the desired correction. The form was released on 13th November 2018 and is about to end soon. Therefore, candidates who wish to make changes must not wait further as the window ones closed will not be opened again. No further changes will then be entertained with respect to exam centers.

GATE 2019 Application StatusĀ 

The authorities are scrutinizing the submitted GATE 2019 application form for data accuracy. If any discrepancy is found, the candidates will be notified via email or SMS. The scrutiny process will continue even after the application portal is closed.

Candidates will be able to check their status after logging into their GOAPS account. It is important to rectify the discrepancies within the allotted time otherwise the application form will get rejected. 

List of Rejected Candidates for GATE 2019

For the reference of the candidates, IIT Madras has released a list of candidates whose GATE 2019 applications have been rejected on the official website of GATE 2019, i.e The list that has been released comprises of two types of candidates – candidates not meeting eligibility requirements and the other who are found to be duplicate. As already announced in the GATE 2019 brochure, it should be noted that for such candidates, no application fee will be refunded and no admit card will be generated/released.

Additionally, a list of enrollment IDs of the candidates whose applications are provisionally accepted has been also released by IIT Madras. For these candidates, it has been specified that their result will be withheld unless the defects are rectified by 15th February 2019.

Note: According to the official brochure, "If a candidate makes more than one application for the same paper, he/she will be allowed to appear in any one session only. One of the duplicate/triplicate applications will be considered and the remaining applications will be rejected without any refund of application fee".

FAQs on GATE 2019 Application Process

1. For how many GATE papers can I apply?

A candidate can apply for only one of the 24 papers listed in the official website of GATE 2019. The choice of the appropriate paper is the responsibility of the candidate. Some guidelines in this respect are suggested below.

1. The candidate is expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of his/her qualifying degree.

2. The candidate is, however, free to choose any paper according to his/her admission plan, keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the institutions in which he/she is seeking admission.

2. I am facing difficulty while uploading my signature. I have followed all the guidelines defined by the GATE authorities. What should I do now?

Check the format in which you are trying to upload the document. Also, check the size and also do not resize the file.
