GATE 2022 Question Paper

GATE 2022 was conducted on 5th and 6th February 2022 across two sessions each day (forenoon and afternoon). The exam consisted of two sections:

  • General Aptitude (GA): 15 marks, 10 questions (MCQs) - Verbal Ability, Numerical Ability, Engineering Mathematics.
  • Core Subjects: 85 marks, 55 questions (MCQs and NATs) - Specific topics relevant to each engineering/science discipline.

The overall difficulty level of GATE 2022 varied depending on the subject and individual sections. Papers for CS/IT, ME, EE, and CH were perceived as moderately to tough, with some sections like Engineering Mathematics and specific technical areas challenging. ECE and CE papers were generally considered moderate, with a balanced mix of easy and challenging questions. Some papers like IN and others were reported as easier to moderate, with fewer complex questions. The number of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NATs) questions varied slightly across papers. Negative marking was applied to incorrect MCQs in both sections.

GATE 2022 Exam Difficulty Level

The overall difficulty level of the GATE 2022 was rated as moderate. However, the difficulty level varied across the different subjects. We have included in the table below the shift-wise difficulty level for GATE 2022 exam:

Overall, the paper was considered moderate. Some sections like Environmental Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering had higher weightage with 11 marks each. Questions from Numerical Methods also carried significant weight.

Electrical Engineering (EE)Easy to Moderate

The difficulty level varied with some sections like Power Electronics and Network Theory being easy, while others like Control Systems and Analog Circuits being more challenging. The Aptitude section was generally considered difficult.

Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)Easy to Moderate

Similar to EE, the difficulty level was not uniform. The Engineering Mathematics and Digital Circuits sections were considered easy, while others like Signals & Systems and Communication Systems were more demanding.

Mechanical Engineering (ME)Moderate to Tough

This paper was one of the tougher ones compared to other subjects. While the General Aptitude section was easy, the technical sections like Manufacturing Processes and Heat Transfer had a substantial weightage and were challenging.

Computer Science Engineering (CSE)Moderate

Overall, the paper was moderate. The Engineering Mathematics and Algorithms sections were relatively easier, while Operating Systems and Computer Architecture were more challenging.

Instrumentation Engineering (IN)Moderately Difficult

Similar to ME, the paper leaned towards the tougher side. Some sections like Measurement & Control Systems and Process Control were demanding, while others like Industrial Instrumentation and Environmental Engineering were slightly easier.

Is the GATE exam tough?

Following UPSC and CAT, GATE is one of the toughest entrance exams In India and is widely chosen by young graduates of the country. Candidates are required to prepare diligently for the GATE entrance exam.

How can I pass the GATE exam in the first attempt?

Candidates appearing for the GATE exam should plan on completing the GATE  syllabus on a weekly basis and make sure that they are able to cover the same in time. Candidates are suggested to keep ample time for revision and practice. Does the GATE exam have negative marking?

The GATE exam has negative marking for MCQs. For every incorrect 2-mark question, 2/3 marks are deducted and for every incorrect 1-mark question, 1/3 marks are deducted. However, there is no negative marking for MSQ and NAT questions.
