Calculation and Normalization of GATE Score

GATE scores are normalized to take into consideration various variations in the multiple papers as conducted. These variations could be related to various factors and especially the difficulty level of the examination.

GATE score normalization is based on the assumption that in a multi-session exam, the abilities of the candidates are equally distributed equally all the sessions. The examination authority ensures that the number of candidates in each session is of the same order of magnitude.

Note: This assumption is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE 2020 is large and the procedure for allocation of the session to candidates is random.

The normalization scores of the candidates will be calculated using the given formulae:

Mijis the marks scored by the candidates by the candidate "j" in the session "i"

Mgt is the average marks secured by the top 0.1% of the candidates in all the sessions

Mgq is the sum of standard deviation marks and mean marks scored by the candidates in the paper all sections considered

Mtiis the average marks scored by 0.1% of the candidates in the session "i"

Miq is the sum of standard deviation marks and mean marks in the session "i"

How will be the GATE 2020 Scores for all the Papers be Calculated?

GATE 2020 papers which will be conducted only in a single session, the GATE 2020 scores will be calculated using the marks actually obtained by the candidates. For multi-session papers, the raw marks obtained by the candidates will be processed through the normalization method and the score obtained after that, the same will be used to prepare GATE 2020 scorecard.

The given formulae will be employed to calculate the GATE 2020 score:

M is the marks the candidate has secured (Single Session papers marks and Multi-Session papers normalized marks)

Mq is general category candidate qualifying mark in the paper

Mt Top 10 or top 0.1% candidates' mean of marks who appeared in the exam (all sessions included in case of multi-session papers)

Sq is the score assigned to Mq, i.e 350

St is the score assigned to Mt, i.e 900
