How to Calculate CAT 2023 Score?

The CAT 2023 scores will be calculated based on the exam's marking scheme. As per the marking scheme, candidates are awarded 3 marks for every correct answer and they lose one mark for every wrong answer. There is no negative marking for non-MCQs to TITA-type questions as per the CAT exam pattern. Now let us have a look at what is the CAT score and how to calculate it.

    What Is CAT Score?

The total mark that a candidate scores in the CAT exam on the basis of its marking scheme is the CAT score. In other words, the marks a student obtains in all three sections (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability) will be his score in the CAT 2023 exam.

How to Calculate CAT 2023 Score?

Candidates can follow the steps given below to calculate their CAT 2023 score:

    • Calculate the number of correct answers you marked in the exam and multiply each by 3
    • Now, calculate the number of incorrect answers and minus the total with the total number of correct answers multiplied by 3.
    • The obtained result will be your CAT score.

CAT Score = (No. of Correct Answers) * 3 - No. of Incorrect Answers

    What Is CAT Scaled Score?

The CAT exam is conducted in multiple slots on the same day (generally three slots). The question papers for each slot are slightly different from one another. CAT scaled score is used to compare a candidate's performance with other candidates for the same and other slots. The scaled score is generated through the normalization process to assure fairness and equity in performance comparison. It could differ from the raw score in both directions.

    What is CAT Composite Score?

The ultimate score determined by IIMs for admission to their programs is called the composite score. The composite score for a candidate is determined by taking into account a variety of factors in addition to their CAT score and is used in the CAT selection process.

Two applicants with identical on-paper scores may have different composite scores depending on a number of factors. Here are the other parameters that are considered while drawing a composite score:

    • Class 10th Marks
    • Class 12th Marks
    • Graduation Percentage/ Grade
    • Work Experience
    • Academic Background
    • Gender Diversity

The formula for calculating CAT Composite Score used by the IIMs is as follows:

How to Calculate CAT 2023 Percentile?

CAT percentile represents a candidate's rank in the CAT exam, relative to the rest of the candidates who appeared in the same or different slots, along with a few other parameters. It points to a candidate’s position among other applicants based on which the ranking of a candidate is decided. It is a unit used to calculate/evaluate the percentage of students above or below you in the merit list.

The CAT result is announced by IIMs in the form of percentile. IIMs and other CAT participating institutes shortlist candidates on the basis of the CAT percentile. The CAT Normalisation Process adopted by the IIMs will be used to calculate the CAT 2023 percentile.

How to Calculate CAT 2023 Percentile?

A candidate’s scaled scores are used to calculate his CAT percentile. The process of calculating the CAT percentile is the same for all the sections. One can follow the given steps to calculate CAT 2023 percentile:

    • Calculate the total number of candidates who appeared for CAT 2023 in all three slots (morning, afternoon, and evening) and assign the value ‘N’ to it.
    • Now, calculate your rank based on your scaled score in any of the three CAT sections and assign the value ‘R’ to it. Let’s assume that if you and some other candidate have identical scaled scores in the DILR section, identical ranks will be assigned to them.
    • The next step is to calculate the percentile score (P) of a candidate with rank (R) in the DILR section using the given formula:

    Percentile Score (P) = ((N-R)/ N )*100

Let us understand this with the following example:

Example: Assume that 2,000 candidates appeared for the CAT 2023 exam. You have topped the exam by securing the first rank, which means that 1,999 candidates scored less than you. Now, your percentile can be calculated as follows:

    ((2000-1)/2000*100 = 99.95 Percentile

Once you have calculated your CAT percentile scores, round them off up to two decimal points. For example, all CAT percentiles greater than or equal to 99.995 are rounded off to 100. All percentiles greater than or equal to 99.985 but less than 99.995 are rounded off to 99.99 and so on. Now, have a look at the IIM CAT percentile calculation.

How to Calculate IIM CAT Percentile?

    • Scores of the CAT exam are calculated according to the marking scheme of CAT i.e. 3 marks for each correct answer and -1 mark for each incorrect answer.
    • After that, the section-wise scores, as well as overall scores of CAT, are normalized to calculate the scaled CAT score.
    • The normalized scores of the CAT exam are then converted into percentiles which are then updated on the CAT scorecard.
    • The percentile of the CAT exam will depend upon many factors such as the difficulty level of the exam and the number of CAT aspirants.

    CAT Percentile Calculation: Stages

Converting CAT scores to percentile scores requires multiple stages. First, scaled scores will be created from the CAT 2023 raw results. The scaled scores will then be used to determine the CAT percentile. The two most important scores on the CAT scorecard, however, are the CAT Scaled Score and CAT Percentile Score. The core marks obtained in the CAT exam are not displayed on the CAT scorecard. Only a candidate's Scaled CAT score Vs Percentile, both overall and per section, will be displayed on the scorecard. The three stages of converting raw CAT score into the final percentile include:

    • CAT Raw Scores: This can be calculated based on the CAT 2023 marking scheme and the level of precision with which a candidate answers the questions. Additionally, candidates can check it using the answer keys that IIMs make available following the CAT exam.
    • CAT Raw Score to CAT Scaled Score: This calculation is done by the IIMs after the normalization of raw results for all CAT exam slots.
    • CAT Scaled Score to CAT Percentile Score: This stage of calculation is done by IIMs depending upon the number of test takers across the CAT exam slots.

    CAT 2023 Normalization Process

CAT 2023 will be conducted in three slots and each slot will have a different question paper. Also, the difficulty level of each question set will be slightly different. Therefore, making use of the normalization process ensures fairness and equity in the marking process for candidates across all the sessions. CAT normalization is done along similar lines as GATE exam scoring, where the normalization is done basis of the fundamental assumption that the distribution of candidates' abilities is similar across all the sessions. The normalization followed in GATE takes into consideration all the variations in the question papers' difficulty levels across different sessions.

The CAT exam scorecard comprises the scaled scores for each section (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Aptitude, and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning) and the total along with the percentiles. The scaled scores are obtained through the normalization process, which involves adjusting the location and scale differences of score distributions across different forms. The scaled scores are then converted into percentiles for shortlisting candidates for further admission rounds at IIMs. Candidates can check out the article below to know everything about the CAT normalization process.

    Dear Student,

CAT percentile is calculated using the formula “( 1 - All India Rank(Total Candidates in the Exam) * 100%”. You can understand this by example. Suppose 100 students appeared in the exam and you ranked 2nd then there are 98 students who have ranked below you. In that case, your percentile will be calculated as (98/100)x100 = 98 %tile. You must note that the CAT scorecard will show the final percentile up to two decimal places only. Those who have scored more than 98 percentile in the exam will have higher chances of getting a call from IIMs …
