What exactly does CAT 2020 Cut Off mean?

CAT 2020 Cut Off is the minimum percentile required by candidates to get a call for admission to various CAT participating colleges. Knowing the CAT 2020 cutoff for MBA colleges is helpful in deciding which MBA college is best for a candidate as per their performance.

Each MBA college accepting CAT score releases its own CAT 2020 Cut Off for admission to their courses. This includes the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The cutoff for different courses or MBA specialization offered by individual institutes is also different.

Factors Affecting CAT 2020 Cutoff

There are various factors that influence the CAT cutoff required for each institute. Following is the list of factors that determines CAT cutoff for an institute.

  • Number of seats for a course

  • Number of applicants for the course

  • Number of candidates shortlisted for the selection round

These were the only factors that determine what a CAT 2020 cutoff for an institute would be. However, there are many other factors which also influence an increase or decrease in the cutoff. These include.

  • The difficulty level of CAT 2020

  • Number of candidates who appeared for the exam

  • Number of candidates who qualified the exam

  • Rank/reputation of the institute (affects the number of applicants)

Factors Affecting CAT Cutoff

Can an Average Student Clear CAT Cutoff?

Yes, an average student can clear the CAT Cutoff. Since CAT is a test of the reasoning and analytical skills, a candidate who is otherwise average in academics can succeed in clearing the CAT Cutoff. It is possible for an average student to get a 99+ percentile score in CAT with hard work and a good preparation plan. However, the hiccup arises while applying for admission to the IIMs since they include academic scores, especially for candidates who are aspiring for IIMA, IIMB and IIMC.

How is CAT Qualifying Cutoff Different from CAT Final Cutoff?

CAT Qualifying Cutoff – Also known as IIM Eligibility Cut off, CAT qualifying cutoff marks is the minimum mark that must be scored by a candidate in order to be eligible for the Interview round of IIMs. If a candidate successfully secures the CAT qualifying marks, then he/she will be eligible to be called up for the GD-PI/WAT rounds conducted by different IIMs.

CAT Final Cutoff – Also goes by the name IIM Call Cut off, CAT final cutoff marks is the minimum percentile score defined by the IIMs for the selection of candidates for the GD-PI/WAT rounds of IIMs. The table provided below will list out the difference between CAT qualifying cutoff and CAT final cutoff:

CAT Qualifying Cutoff

CAT Final Cutoff

Meeting this cutoff criterion will not assure the selection of the candidates for the GD-PI/WAT round

Meeting this cutoff criterion will not assure the admission of the candidates in IIMs

This cutoff is fixed before the CAT result is announced

This cutoff is fixed after the CAT result is declared

Each campus announce this cutoff in their admission criteria and shortlist notification

The Institutes do not announce this cutoff publicly

This cutoff for all IIMs remains above 90 percentile except for IIM Ahmedabad where CAT qualifying cutoff has hovered around 80 percentile from 2016 onwards

The final CAT cutoff of top IIMs remains 99 percentile and above and the same for the new IIMs remain 95 percentile and above

CAT 2020 Cutoff for IIMs

IIMs declare the CAT 2020 cutoff to shortlist candidates for the admission process. However, the actual call cutoff of IIMs is much higher than the eligibility cutoff. The eligibility cutoff is declared before the declaration of CAT 2020 results but the call cutoff or final cutoff is only released after the results are released. For eg., IIMA has declared the CAT 2020 cutoff to be 80 percentile this year but the actual cutoff for the institute is usually over 99 percentile.

IIMs require candidates to clear both sectional as well as the overall cutoff for CAT 2020 in order to shortlist them for the selection rounds, which include Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI).

Check: IIM Eligibility Cut Off vs IIM Call Cut Off - What's the Difference

After the declaration of CAT 2020 Results, IIMs prepare a merit list of candidates to shortlist them for the admission process. The cutoff is different for reserved and unreserved seats in each individual IIM and every candidate has to satisfy the cutoff for their category to be called for an IIM interview.

IIM Selection Criteria

IIMs select candidates on the basis of their CAT scores. Here is the selection process in brief.

IIM Selection Criteria

Step 1: Shortlisting

IIMs release their Eligibility Cut Off before the declaration of CAT results. Only the candidates who clear the eligibility cutoff can fill the application form for the respective IIM. Once, CAT 2020 is conducted and results are declared, IIMs release the final shortlist of candidates called for admission rounds based on the Call Cut Off.

Step 2: Interview

Candidates who clear the Call Cut Off appear for the selection rounds of the respective IIMs. As a part of the selection process, IIMs conduct WAT, GD and PI and the performance of the candidates is note din all three of these rounds.

Step 3: Selection

The final selection of candidates is done based on the overall application and performance of the candidate. The following factors are considered in final selection:

  • CAT score
  • Graduation score
  • Class X & XII score
  • Performance in GD-PI/WAT
  • Work experience
  • Diversity factors

Various IIMs release their respective weightage for the calculation of final composite score based on which the final Merit List and Wait List are released by respective IIMs. Merit Listed candidates must confirm their admission by paying the fee. Any seats left vacant thereafter are transferred to the Waitlisted candidates as per merit.

Dear Student,

Yes, the syllabus of banking and CAT exam is almost the same. However, the level of difficulty of the CAT exam is very difficult compared to the banking exam. The SSC or IBPS PO coaching will help you understand the basics of Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability and English Language. You can directly proceed to solve the advance level questions of CAT exam without going through the basics. The coaching will help you while preparing for other MBA entrance exams such as MAT, CMAT, GMAT or XAT. You can check the detailed syllabus of CAT exam provided here. Besides ...
