What is Legal Reasoning?

Before understanding how to score more in the Legal Reasoning section, first understand what exactly is the Legal Reasoning section all about.

The Legal Reasoning section of CLAT evaluates your legal reasoning power rather than legal knowledge. However, legal laws can also sometimes be a part of this section. The questions from the Legal Reasoning section consist of principles of law, legal points and current events. This section is a part of the CLAT exam syllabus because it judges the legal aptitude knowledge, problem-solving ability and research aptitude of the candidates. Till 2019, Legal Aptitude used to be a different section in the exam. But, from 2020 onwards, the exam does not have a separate Legal Aptitude section.

The Legal Reasoning section consists of passages that are 450 words each based on the factual scenarios. The questions from this section will have legal matters, moral-philosophical queries and public policy questions. The candidates who previously didn’t have knowledge of this section can also attempt the questions from the Legal Reasoning section. General knowledge of contemporary legal and moral matters would be sufficient to be able to answer the questions from this section.

CLAT 2024 Legal Reasoning Question Pattern

The CLAT 2024 Legal Reasoning questions includes a few passages, each of which would be based on:

  • Identifying and implying the principles and directions given in the passage.
  • Applying such principles and rules to different factual circumstances.

  • Candidates must avoid questions that they are not familiar with to not waste much time in thinking and avoid negative marking.
