CUET Exam Pattern 2026

CUET Exam Pattern must be known to the students who are willing to appear for CUET Exam 2026. CUET Exam pattern 2026 consists of exams for three sections namely language test, domain- specific subject exams and General Tests. Students appearing for CUET UG 2026 must check the details of exam patterns like total number of sections, mode of examination, exam duration, negative marking and format of question paper. Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduate (CUET UG) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). 

CUET Exam Pattern is the same for all the subjects and each subject has 50 questions for 5 marks each. All the questions are objective types and are asked in MCQ format. The medium of instruction is English apart from 12 language selection and it is conducted in computer based test mode. Students are awarded with 5 marks for every correct answer and one marks get deducted for every incorrect option. Students can select up to 5 subjects as per the new exam pattern.  CUET UG Exam 2026 has been scheduled to be held between May 11 and May 31, 2026 for admission to different courses offered under CUET UG 2026.

CUET UG Exam Pattern 2026: Latest Pattern Highlights

Students must go through the changes that have been incorporated in the CUET Exam Pattern 2026 as mentioned below: 

Total Subjects & Selection

  • Students can select up to a maximum of 5 subjects which was earlier 6 (including languages and the general test). 
  • The total number of  subjects has been reduced to 37  as against earlier lists of 63 subjects. The details of 37 subjects are mentioned here: 
    • 13 Languages
    • 23 Domain Subjects
    • 1 General Test 

This reduction has been done by the NTA to simplify options and align testing with core academic domains.  

Duration & Mode

  • The total duration remains 60 minutes for each subject paper.  
  • The entire exam will be computer-based and the questions will be available in an online mode.  

This uniform duration helps students to manage their time effectively and avoid variations which were observed in earlier patterns. 

Question Type

  • All questions across different sections are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and there are 50 questions in all three sections. 
  • All questions are compulsory. There are no optional questions as per the new CUET Exam Pattern 2026.  

Marking Scheme

Students must check the marking scheme and they should not attempt questions where they have doubts as there is negative marking also.

  • Correct Answer: +5 marks
  • Incorrect Answer: –1 mark
  • Unattempted: 0 marks

CUET UG Exam Pattern 2026: Section Wise Details

As mentioned earlier, CUET Exam is conducted for three main sections which is mentioned below:

  1. Section I: Language Tests: This section checks students ability for different areas such as reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and verbal reasoning. Students will have the flexibility to select a language medium (e.g., English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi, Urdu, etc.)
  2. Section II: Domain-Specific Subjects: Students can select domain specific CUET subjects irrespective of the subjects that they have studied in Class 12. Ideally, students should choose subjects that they have studied earlier. As per the CUET Exam pattern 2026, students can select from a total of 23 domain subjects as mentioned below:

    Details on CUET 2026 Exam Pattern

    CUET exam pattern 2026 for UG is divided into four sections. Each section has a set of questions based on the domain selected by the candidates. Detailed information on CUET 2026 exam pattern in different sections is provided below.

    Section IA of CUET UG Exam Pattern 2026

    • Section IA consists of the Language Test. There are 13 different languages in the CUET 2026 exam pattern.
    • Test takers can select any one of these languages to appear for Section IA.
    • Each language in Section IA of CUET exam pattern 2026 comprises 50 questions
    • In the language test of CUET 2026, linguistic skills are tested through Reading Comprehension.
    • Different kinds of Reading comprehension may be asked in CUET 2026 IA Section, for instance, RC on passages, Factual RCs, Literary and Narrative RCs, or Literary Aptitude and Vocabulary as per CUET 2026 exam pattern.

    Section IB of CUET UG 2026 Exam Pattern

    • According to CUET exam pattern 2026, Special Languages Tests are conducted in Section IB of CUET 2026. (The languages that are excluded from Section IA of CUET 2026)
    • In Section IB there will be 50 questions.
    • In the Special Languages` Tests of CUET 2026, language is tested through Reading Comprehension of various types.
    • Some of the Factual RCs, Literary, and Narrative RCs, or Literary Aptitude and Vocabulary RCs could be asked in CUET 2026 IB Section.

    Section II of CUET Exam Pattern 2026

    • Domain-Specific Subjects tests are dealt in Section II of CUET 2026 exam pattern.
    • There are 23 Domain-Specific Subjects in Section II of CUET 2026.
    • Test takers can choose up to five domain subjects; earlier the limit was 6.
    • There will be 50 questions in Section II of CUET 2026 exam pattern and the exam-taker must answer all the questions. Per the new pattern, there won't be any optional questions.
    • Questions are of an objective type in Section II of CUET exam pattern 2026.
    • CUET 2026 syllabus will remain the same as the NCERT Class XII syllabus.

    Section III of CUET UG 2026 Exam Pattern

    • Section III of CUET exam pattern 2026 is a General Test and it is optional for the candidates.
    • For dropped subjects in CUET UG 2026, the general test will carry the weightage.
    • Questions from General Knowledge, Current Affairs, General Mental Ability, Numerical Ability, Quantitative Reasoning, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, and Stat taught until Class 8 Logical and Analytical Reasoning are asked in this Section III of CUET exam pattern 2026.

    CUET Exam Pattern 2026: Domain-Specific Subjects & Languages

    CUET exam pattern 2026 for UG includes the Domain-specific subjects and languages. Check about the domain-specific CUET UG 2026 exam pattern below:  

    Language Paper (1A and 1B): 

    This section is compulsory for all candidates as per CUET UG exam pattern 2026. Candidates can choose their preferred language from a list of 13 Indian languages in Section 1A and 20 languages in Section 1B (a mix of regional Indian languages and foreign languages). 

    Domain Paper

    This section is also compulsory for all candidates as per CUET 2026 exam pattern. Candidates can choose five subjects from a list of 23 subjects. All the questions will be compulsory. The list of Domain Papers as per CUET exam pattern 2026 is as follows:

    This section is optional as per CUET exam pattern 2026. Candidates can choose one subject from a list of 6 subjects. 40 questions are to be attempted out of 50 in each subject. The list of Additional Subjects is as follows:

    CUET Exam Pattern 2026: Marking Scheme

    CUET 2026 marking scheme hasn’t undergone much update. We have listed soem of the important details regarding mark division, section-wise mark distribution, and scheme of marking to be followed by NTA when evaluating students.

    • As notified by the UGC Chairman, no options regarding the number of questions to be attempted will be given to students. They need to answer all the questions asked in the paper.
    • The CUET 2026 paper will comprise 50 questions each from the language, domain, and general test sections
    • For every correct answer, 5 marks will be awarded. In case of an incorrect response, 1 mark will be deducted.
    • Zero marks will be given to unattempted questions or those marked for review.
    • If a question is found to be wrong, every student who attempts it will be awarded the full 5 marks.
