Active voice to passive voice

Dear student,

Here's how to differentiate and shuffle between active & passive voice.

Active voice is direct and focuses on the doer. Passive voice shifts the focus to what is being done and who or what is affected.

Imagine a sentence as a mini-scene with actors and actions.

  • Active Voice: The actor (the person or thing doing the action) is the star of the sentence. We focus on who is doing what.
  • Passive Voice: The thing being acted upon becomes the star. We focus on what is being done and to whom or what. The original actor might not even be important enough to mention!

Example: Imagine a dog chasing a ball

Active:The dog (actor) chased (action) the ball (thing acted upon). (Focus: The dog is doing the chasing.)

Passive:The ball (thing acted upon) was chased (action) by the dog (actor - sometimes optional). (Focus: The ball is having something done to it.)

Hope this helps!
