It is such a complex field to learn that if you can get through it alive, then your confidence will soar. I’ll explain my reasoning using two perspectives: You have decided that you want a career in medicine. Studying biomedical engineering will give you a broad perspective of the many different topics within BME. You will gain knowledge which is relevant to the following career paths: Medical school - The advancement of technology has led to the development of increasingly complex medical devices. If you become a doctor, you’ll benefit from studying BME because you’ll be more knowledgeable about the interface of these devices and your patients. Engineering - In BME you learn about every type of engineering: computer, electrical, and mechanical. You also learn about physiology and integrate all these disciplines to solve problems that arise in the body. There are limitless problems to solve and the devices you make can make a huge difference in a lot of people’s lives. Research - Research is for those who want to make ground breaking discoveries in the lab. You’ll spend years and years (8–12) in school to finish a B.S. and PHd, and in the end you’ll be an expert at a very specific topic related to BME. You could find the cure for Alzheimers. You’re not sure what type of career you want. If this is you, first consider other fields of study. Talk to your friends, families, and counsellors to receive input and help make a more informed decision. If nothing else seems to stand out, then DEFINITELY study BME. It will be an absolute STRUGGLE, but you will come out smarter and more confident on the other side. Assuming you’re considering BME as a major, here are a few things to keep in mind: Difficulty - This is one of the toughest majors around. You will need to work your ass off for many years to be successful. You will have to sacrifice other things in life in order to make it work. You’ll have lots of nights with little sleep, lots of frustrating homework problems, and lots of test anxiety. It sounds terrible, I know, but I am not writing this to dissuade you. In fact, I write this to persuade you that you can only accomplish big things if you endure big struggles. And from my perspective, BME was definitely worth the struggle. Job security - Engineers seem to be in pretty high demand in today’s economy given the advancement of automation and the need for a workforce that can work well with technology. You’ll be able to pivot within BME to a specialty, such as electrical or mechanical engineering. That way, you’ll be qualified to get a job in software or in mechanical engineering once you graduate. You don’t learn as many of the skills as you would if you majored in software or ME, but you’re exposed to it enough that you aren’t too far away from being caught up with the people who study those majors. Lateral movement - Building off the previous answer, you’ll be able to eventually fish for jobs that aren’t related to BME at all. You’ll develop some skillsets, and in the mean time, test your interests at different jobs. Most kids don’t really know what they want to do when applying for college. So if you decided to study BME, you’ll have more time to experiment different types of work. Sure, it’ll likely be engineering-focused for a while. But since you practice learning difficult material in BME, you’ll be more confident in the future that you can learn any other new skills. Like I said before, BME is one of the most difficult disciplines around.

These are the medical equipment's. I'd say *BIOMEDICAL EQUIPMENTS*. You will study about these equipments, every part, every function, everything about it from the base. And also you will design one of this on your own in your projects. Can u imagine??, you will design a device that will save or help thousands of lives. Well, this comes under healthcare companies where you will design new medical devices. There are two categories in medical equipment's. One is diagnostic equipment's which are used to identify patient's problems like scanning (x- ray scan) to check any fractures in the bones. Another one is Therapeutic Equipment's which are used to treat the patient's problems like defibrillators to re-initiate an electric pulse to the heart… Have you seen in movies like when a person is met with an accident, will be given shock waves by the doctors. That's it. That's the defibrillator device. About biomedical engineers work. There is a place for biomedical engineers in every hospitals. Whenever an equipment malfunctions, we will be called to check on that. This is not an easy job. If we make one small mistake, it will lead to a patient's death or injury. This job known as *Service Engineer* in BME- Biomedical engineering. Have you heard about healthcare companies??? … Siemens, GE, Perfint Healthcare, etc are recruits the biomedical engineers. In here you have three jobs, 1) Sales Executive/Engineer- you will explain your company's new device to the hospitals (customers) and sell them. 2) Service Engineer- your customers will call for you to service/maintain the device . And you will go there and fix them. 3) Research and development- here you will think of new ideas, design them and test them. You may search for “*new biomedical technologies*” in online. Awesome, isn't it. If you are interested in creating new devices that helps make people live and breath better, then you have come to the right place(biomedical engineering). Try to get into best RnD(research and development) companies or you can start your own company. The choice is yours. There is another opportunity for biomedical engineers, that is, in intellectual property and patents. Here you have to clear the exams to get the job (central govt job). I heard that biomedical engineers are in demand nowadays. If you are planning to take biomedical engineering, my congratulations and best wishes for your bright future.

R&D- Generally the R&D companies hire employees through campus placements from a small group of colleges. Good luck for that. The health tech industry in Andhra & Telangana is a bright prospect in future when it comes to R&D opportunities. Service- The job i am currently in. You get to learn a lot about the internal functioning of various medical devices. There are plenty of learning opportunities, trainings. The happiness you get after indirectly saving a life can't be measured. You'll be nervous at start but with right guidance service is the most satisfying job. Application engineer- The role of an application engineer is to explain to customer about the working of a specific medical device. Application engineers work hand to hand with sales team. Sales engineer- Sales of medical equipment are handled by the sales engineer. They have targets as well as incentives so it's a double edged sword. Hospital engineer- Every big hospital has a Biomedical department in which there are typically 5–6 engineers who are responsible to attend to emergency breakdown of any medical equipment. There are various areas in which a Biomedical engineer can work. The salary at start is not appropriate for some posts but then again if you work hard & have right skills you can land a good job just after graduation. Don't get demotivated by people who say that Biomedical has no scope, or it's only about research. More than 75% of Biomedical jobs are occupied by electronics engineer just because talented Biomedical engineers switch their fields after graduation.

The scope here depends on your interests. But there is always something if you remain interested in this field. Firstly, you have to choose- do you want to go in research area (plenty of opportunities) or you want to directly start working (tough to start, not so if you have the right skills).The opportunities in this field in both research and job wise are endless. The job/ career prospects for biomedical engineers are moderate in abroad and India. There are diverse areas and fields, in which biomedical engineers can work. They can work in varied areas like medical equipment manufacturing, work in both governments as well as private sector.
