Dear Student,
Regional reservation in Andhra Pradesh universities like AU (Andhra University) and SVU (Sri Venkateswara University) exists to ensure that students from specific local regions have access to the majority of seats in colleges located in their own area. By policy, 85% of seats in any course are reserved for "local candidates", that is, students who have studied for at least four years in institutions within that region, while only 15% of seats remain for "non-local" candidates from the other region. This system, governed by Article 371(D) of the Indian Constitution and the AP Reorganisation Act, aims to protect educational opportunities for students from their home regions, especially after the state's bifurcation and to prevent crowding out by students from other areas. Although both the AU and SVU regions apply this local quota system, a student from the SVU region applying to AU colleges (or vice versa) will be treated as "non-local" and considered for only those 15% of unreserved seats, usually resulting in higher cutoffs and more competition for non-local candidates. We hope that we were able to answer your query successfully. All the best for a great future ahead!
