DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic Acid. It is the material in our cells that carries all the instructions needed for a living thing to grow, function, and reproduce. DNA looks like a twisted ladder or a spiral staircase. This shape is called a double helix. The sides of the ladder are made up of sugar and phosphate molecules, and the steps are made of four special chemical bases: Adenine (A), Thymine (T), Cytosine (C), and Guanine (G). A always pairs with T, and C always pairs with G. This simple yet powerful structure enables DNA to copy itself when cells divide and pass on genetic information from parents to their offspring.
