On March 20, 2017, Prakash Javadekar, HRD Minister termed vacant teaching posts in higher educational institutes as a serious problem. He revealed that around 205 teaching posts are vacant in higher learning institutes particularly in the central universities.
Delivering a speech in Lok Sabha, Javadekar pointed that most of the students who complete their graduation are not willing to take up teaching jobs, which results in the shortage of faculty members in higher learning institutes. He indicated that vacant teaching posts in central universities have become a serious problem. Currently, 20% of teaching posts are vacant in central varsities.

He further explained that a total number of 41 central universities across the country come under the purview of Ministry of Human Resource and Development and filling up vacant teaching posts in central varsities is a continuous process. The responsibility of filling up of vacant teaching posts lies with the central universities that are autonomous bodies created under the respective Acts of Parliament.
With an objective to mitigate the shortage of teachers in central universities, the government increased the age of retirement in central universities to 65 years. Javadekar clarified that the teachers might be also re-employed beyond 65 years of age and up to 70 years depending on their fitness and vacant teaching positions.

Earlier, in a public meeting, Javadekar advised students to take up teaching as a profession. Nowadays, most of the educated youth are not interested in taking up teaching profession and the number of teachers available has been reducing every year. Therefore, more students need to take up teaching profession to mitigate the shortage of teachers.
