Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) has selected a girl and a boy student to work on gender sensitization. This is the first time that the university has introducing gender champions.

Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) has selected a girl and a boy student to work on gender sensitization. This is the first time that the university has introducing gender champions. The students were selected on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, and will work on campus regarding the cause for a year.

BBAU Spokesperson, Govind Pandey said that students have applied from 15 different departments of the university to be selected as the first gender champions of the university. These students will have to present their ideas, process and events to spread gender awareness. Based on their presentation the selection will be done, said Pandey.

Selection will also be done on the basis of the guidelines provided by the UGC for the champions. Pandey also informed that the gender champions will initially be selected for a period of one year and will only be extended for one or two years if the students perform exceedingly well. Students who will serve as gender champions will also be awarded a certificate of appreciation.

The responsibilities that will be given to gender champions will be to guide the peer group in integrating gender in all activities and events that are organised by the institution with the help of posters, group discussions and debates.

A gender champion club will also be promoted by these students by creating a website, writing a blog or column on gender equity, untold stories of inspiring men and women whose lives were changed. Pandey also said that this will help in developing the mindset of students and make them advocates of gender equality who will continue to monitor progress towards gender justice.
