CBSE Introduces Skill Courses from Class 6 to 11

Design Thinking, Artificial Intelligence and Physical Activity Trainer are the new skill courses launched by CBSE for Class 11th students. 

CBSE Skill Courses

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has launched new skill courses from Class 6 to 11, and these courses will be offered to students from the academic session 2020-21. CBSE clarified that these courses have been introduced as per NEP (New Education Policy) 2019, which stated that there should be no gap/ separation between co-curricular, curricular and extra-curricular activities. Equal emphasis has to be given to academics, vocational education/ physical education. Therefore, the CBSE has decided to introduce three new skill courses.

List of CBSE New Skill Courses

CBSE will introduce the following skill courses for the Class 11th students from the academic session 2020-21 -

Design Thinking: The main objective of this course is to broaden the horizons of creativity. The course will enable the students to come up with new and innovative solutions for different problems. Even the conditioned thinkers will be motivated to come up with effective innovations and solutions through ‘Design Thinking’.

Artificial Intelligence: This course will help students to understand the concept of unlimited thinking capacity of humans. All the basic concepts of AI will be taught to students.

Physical Activity Trainer: The course aims to make students keep their body and mind healthy. The course involves all the skills that are required to become a physical trainer. On the other hand, the course becomes a life skill, as it will inculcate idea and knowledge of how to stay fit.

Apart from the above three courses, CBSE has already been offering 17 skill subjects at the secondary level and 37 skill subjects at the senior secondary level. More than 8 lakh students are enrolled in skill subjects offered by CBSE.

CBSE offers skill subject as an additional 6th subject at the secondary level. If a student fails in any of the three elective subjects such as Social Sciences, Mathematics or Science, the additional skill subject will be replaced in the place of the subject that the student failed. The result of Class 10th shall be computed on the basis of five subjects.

CBSE has also directed schools to offer at least one skill subject at the senior secondary level (Class 11th & 12th).
