India Will Gain 100% Literacy Rate in Next Five Years: Prakash Javadekar

Addressing the gathering at the ‘Festival of Education’ organised by the Government of Rajasthan in Jaipur, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar hoped that India would be successful in achieving 100% literacy in the next five years. He pointed that the literacy rate of India was 18% in the post independence era while it has now risen up to 80%. He was hopeful that India would achieve full literacy in the next five years if it continued to work in that direction.

Students from Class 6 to Class 12 could play a vital role in passing on their knowledge to their grandparents, parents and family members who were deprived of education earlier. Eradication of illiteracy can be made possible only if students take an active part in it. As much as one says that a person is regarded as 'literate' if he/she is able to read and write, we shall not assume that education is merely confined to learning how to do that. Instead, people must try to acquire vast knowledge in various aspects.

Javadekar insisted the educational institutes must impart quality education and lay more emphasis on inculcating moral values at par with employability skills. A student who completes his/her education must emerge as a good human being in the society.

Improving Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) will also improve the literacy rate of India. At present, a lot of students dropping out of schools because of various reasons which must be regulated by the introduction of strict policies and changes. For this purpose, proper awareness drives must be conducted among the people in remote or rural areas as the drop out tendency is more in these locations.
