The researchers' team under Prof. S. S. Islam in Jamia Milia Islamia have successfully developed a quantum thermometer which is highly sensitive and able to measure minute changes in the environment in 300 milliseconds.

JMI Researchers Develop Quantum Thermometer

An ultra-sensitive quantum thermometer has been developed at the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research Centre at Jamia Milia Islamia University, New Delhi. The researchers have said that the quantum thermometer is made with the help of Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) array. The thermometer is claimed to be efficient in measuring the minute changes in the atmosphere in less than a second. The thermometer which is developed under Director of the Centre Prof. S.S. Islam is able to calculate temperatures from 27 degrees Celcius to -196-degree Celsius in a measured 300 milliseconds as claimed in a statement issued by the central university.

The university statement claims that the thermometer can also return to its original value in 800 milliseconds other than the measurements done in 300 milliseconds. The world famous Science Journal Nanoscale Advances have also published about the research.

The statement said that widespread applications can be also found with the thermometer in cryogenic temperature sensing. The efficiency of the thermometer in the high-temperature window is also notable. The thermometer can be used to measure temperature in challenging environments such as in microfluidic circuits and living cells in its miniaturized form.

The team of the quantum thermometer research includes Abid and Poonam Sherawat who are working to develop a prototype of the quantum thermometer which can be used, on electronic on-chip thermometers which do not require calibrations in both of high temperature and cryogenic states because of its linear sensitivity plot. However, the main development is still in the research phase.

The head of the project, Professor Islam has said that unfortunately under 12k, the thermometer cannot be tested because of the limitations the experimental setups have. But seeing the performance of the thermometer, it is effective for temperatures below 0k also.
