National Symposium is going to be organized on "Genetic Basis of Haemetological Disorders with Special Emphasis on Sickle Cell Disease" on 25th & 26th July, 2016& Hands-on Workshop on "Molecular Diagnostics" on 26th July to 1st August, 2016 at Deptt. of Biochemistry, Pt J.N.M. Medical College Raipur.
Pt J.N.M. Medical College Raipur came in to existence on 9th September 1963 when the college was started with 60 students in a small OPD block of Ayurvedic College. The college received recognition from Medical Council of India in 1969. MBBS seats were increased from 100 to 150 in the year 2009.
P.G. courses were started in the year 1971-72. At present the college admits 71 students per year for MD/MS and 21 students for two year diploma courses in the various departments.
About the Symposium:
In India, the sickle cell gene is distributed mainly in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Jharkhand, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In some communities, the prevalence of the sickle cell trait is as high as 30% of the total population. In Chhattisgarh population prevalence is nearly 10%. Other hematological diseases particularly Beta Thalassaemia and hematological malignancies are also having high incidence in state of Chhattisgarh. The symposium will be useful in enlightening the clinicians, faculty research scholars and students on genetic basis of these disorders thus updating them on novel diagnostic and management approaches. The workshop will be aimed to enhance the skills of students, research scholars and faculty so that they would be able to utilize the knowledge in “Molecular Diagnostics” to design their research project which will prove beneficial for finding newer horizons of diagnosis and management of genetic disorders.
