The University Grants Commission (UGC) has reportedly initiated discussions with law colleges to start offering the courses of LL.B and LL.M in regional languages. Read further to know more details.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is expected to start offering law courses such as LL.B and LL.B in regional languages soon. As per reports, this step is being taken under the National Education Policy (NEP) with the intention of expanding the scope of higher education in India by providing courses in Indian regional languages.
According to the latest updates, UGC is planning to start the legal courses of LL.B and LL.M in regional languages. For this venture, the authority has also commenced the primary discussions with the law colleges offering LL.B and LL.M courses.
Jagadesh Kumar, the chairperson of UGC, stated that law is one area in which students will undoubtedly benefit if they study in regional languages. He said that lawyers can establish a personal connection with their clients by interacting with them in their mother tongues. They will also be able to prepare documents in regional languages and arguments in local courts can take place only in the local languages.

Kumar further revealed that the UGC is parallelly discussing this idea with the vice-chancellors of national universities and other educational institutions. He stated many VCs have shown quite a positive attitude towards introducing law courses in Indian languages.
Apart from law programmes, the UGC is also considering introducing other UG and PG programmes in regional languages. The chairperson said that the commission plans to start full-fledged degree programmes in regional languages. This will be started with law courses and science and humanities programmes will follow suit.
Jagadesh Kumar also said that while efforts are being made to start more courses in Indian languages, at the same time it is not being neglected that English helps people interact with the larger world. Along with teaching in regional languages, the students will also be trained to use English as a communication tool. The UGC aspires that students should not feel discouraged by the new subjects that they learn because of the language barrier. To abate this, being taught in their mother language will make them feel much more comfortable.
