Calcutta University has extended the last date of admission in the colleges affiliated to the university in order to fill up the vacant seats. Partha Chatterjee, Education Minister, West Bengal said that the deadline has been extended from July 10, 2018 to August 20, 2018 so that they can accommodate as many students as possible since a large number of seats are lying vacant.
However, he did not comment on the actual number of seats lying vacant in all the affiliated colleges of the Calcutta University but said that there are enough seats for students. He further said that even last year a huge number of seats were lying vacant in many colleges of the varsity. Therefore, the attempt to extended the deadline may help fill up the seats in 2018.

Meanwhile, the media asked about his views regarding the reintroduction of entrance tests at Jadavpur University. He said that it is an autonomous institution and the government will not interfere with its functioning and decision.
Many students from the JU protested against the university’s decision regarding the same. The students went on a hunger strike as well regarding the university’s decision to scrap the entrance test in six subjects.

The university finally decided to reintroduce the entrance test for the six art subjects and the exams will be conducted in the month of July.
