On Wednesday, the Kerala Cabinet decided to elevate the Indian Institute of Technology and Management, Kerala (IITM-K) to a digital university. This will be the first digital university of Thiruvananthapuram for which, the governor has also been recommended to issue an ordinance. After the elevation, the university will be known as ‘The Kerala University of Digital Sciences Innovation and Technology’.

Under the university, there will be a total of five schools established. These schools will be broadly classified as School of Computing, School of Informatics, School of Electronics Design and Automation, School of Digital Humanities and School of Digital Bio-science. The major concentration of the university will be in the field of research and postgraduate academic disciplines. Apart from research, the university will also concentrate on other digital fields such as AI, Cloud Computing, AR, IoT, etc. Apart from strengthening the collaboration with industry-based research development, academic collaboration with such industries will also be considered.

The decision has been taken after the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, as a step taken in consideration to promote the industries in Kerala which are based on Information technology & Digital Technology. As per the officials, the elevation of the digital university will contribute to the growth of entrepreneurship & digital research, and will also strengthen the relationship between technology-based education and industries. This will not only help the industries to build up a quality human resource but also give emphasis to the new edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Big Data, Blockchain, Cognitive Science, Augmented Reality, IoT, etc.
