IIT Guwahati Collaborates with ISRO to Set Up First Space Technology Centre in the Northeast

The region of North-East is getting its first space centre as a part of the collaboration between ISRO and IIT Guwahati. The Space Technology Centre (STC) is established in IIT Guwahati to be visited by ISRO scientists frequently.

IIT Guwahati Collaborates with ISRO to Set Up First Space Technology Centre in the Northeast

The Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Guwahati has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Space Research Institute (ISRO). Both the institutions are in talks to set up IITG-ISRO Space Technology Cell (STC) inside the new campus of IIT Guwahati institute which was recently inaugurated by the governor of Assam Jagdish Mukhi. The new academic complex will be utilised to achieve excellence in research and development.

On Wednesday, a press release issued by IIT Guwahati claimed that the IITG-ISRO STC will be the first of its kind augment research and capacity building process for Space Technology at the north-eastern regions in the field of space technology.

The release stated that the research centre will primarily constitute of faculty members of IIT Guwahati and researchers, students of the institute. Also, officials and scientists from ISRO will be paying a visit to the centre often for scientific researches. The release said the aim of the STC is not only to contribute in the socio-economic needs of the north-eastern region of India but also to complement various ISRO research projects across India on the field of basic research on space science.

With STC, the Institute of IIT Guwahati and ISRO can work together to solve space science related problems in the modern world. Collaborative research works will help both the institutions to find short term and long terms solutions.

The Space Technology Center (STC) in IIT Guwahati is expected to act as a centre of motivation to the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the institute to get motivated about the field of space technologies and receive proper orientation towards the subject which can eventually be helpful to develop curiosity among them.

On the other hand, the new complex will also conduct courses on nanotechnology. On the event of the inauguration, the governor expressed that Nanotechnology is important to open up new vistas for the technology-related sectors and it already had played a pivotal role largely on IT and mechanical sectors.

The governor has requested the faculties to convey their knowledge and wisdom and teach nanotechnology as a tool for the betterment of humankind in future.
