SHREYAS - Apprenticeship Scheme for Freshers Launched by HRD Minister Javadekar

“Education with Skills is the need of the hour…” are the words of Minister of Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar. To combat this need, the union minister launched a new scheme for the freshers of the country to join in apprenticeship programmes with the industries. The Scheme for Higher Education Youth in Apprenticeship and Skills or SHREYAS will help provide the students with the opportunity to gain experience in a particular field along with a stipend.

The main goal for introducing the SHREYAS scheme is to make those students who are working for their degrees to be more capable, employable and skilled for their jobs. Javadekar has brought out the SHREYAS scheme for students who are studying in degree courses that are mainly non-technical in nature. This was done so that the students are able to grow their skills in the various areas of interest and so that the students are able to get skills that are required for employment purposes as well as learning the job while studying. This will further help the students in getting far better job opportunities especially from the various efforts put in by the government for the employment opportunities. A total of three ministries, i.e. the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Ministry of Labour and Employment and Ministry of Skill and Development, came together to form the SHREYAS scheme.

The Scheme offers the industry to give a report of the demand and supply of the skills that are needed in the industry, thus also providing educational institutions first-hand information of the requirements of the various industries in India. The scheme will be available for the academic year April-May 2019. As of now, there are more than 40 institutions for higher education that have partnered up with the SHREYAS scheme of introducing courses with the apprenticeship.
