Good news for the 'Agniveers': The the Union Education Ministry has decided to start a 3-year bachelor programme course for the 'Agniveers' of India. What does this entail? The 'Agniveers' will be provided with a 3-year undergraduate course list from which they can choose their graduation degree. The course will be conducted via the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).This course is instrumental in providing 'Agniveers' with requisite employment options on a national as well as international scale once their 4 year tenure with the armed forces gets over. It will signify their skill training and help in attaining employment outside the defence services.
The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force will be signing an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with IGNOU soon in order to start the implementation of this goodwill scheme. The 'Agniveers' are part of the new 'Agnipath' scheme launched by th Government of India which intends to engage soldiers in the defense forces on a contractual basis for a short term in order to make salary cuts and pension savings to curtail the looming economic crisis. It will also be the perfect fit for a youthful profile of the Indian defence forces as the youth of the country have been called on to provide their services as 'Agniveer' and make their country proud.
After the end of the four-year tenure of serving in the defense force, 25% of the cadres will be retained based on merit, performance and the policies of the time. The rest will have their credits to pursue a civilian career of their choice. The IGNOU degree programme will recognise the in-service skill training received by the Agniveers as credits for their graduation. This will cover 50% of the credits needed for graduation and will be from the technical as well as non-technical skill training given to the Agniveers. The remaining 50% credits will be from the course chosen by the candidate out of the course list provided by IGNOU.
The degree will be awarded based on UGC nomenclature as applicable.
