Recently, the PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry along with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, conducted research on Industry-Academia Linkage in India and found out that Indian Universities and Industries have to do a lot more to build-up better linkages. The research title was - Framework of University-Industry Linkages in Research. One of the major reasons behind, India’s baby steps towards University-Industry Linkages is the absence of appropriate schemes and policies by the government that would support the cause.
The study revealed the urgent need of bringing appropriate laws and schemes to strengthen the university-industry linkages to increase innovation. Higher investment for such R&D projects should be provided by the government in support of the cause. President of PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry, DK Aggarwal said that stronger support is required from the government to facilitate the bond between Industries and Universities by introducing more entrepreneurship programmes.

Another important issue that is brought to light by this analysis, is the limitation of research capacity in India. Fewer interdisciplinary studies and low enrolment rate in PhD programmes has weakened the academic ecosystem of the country. As a result, the UIL of India is very low in comparison with developed nations. For instance, the study mentioned the number of scientists per 1000 people in India in comparison with other countries, check it out here:
Country | No. of Scientists per 1000 People |
---|---|
India | 7.8 |
Canada | 180.7 |
South Korea | 53.1 |
USA | 21.2 |
Thus, there is an urgent need to transfer university knowledge to the market by making supportive policies, to further increase the UIL of India.
Even when the overall UIL of India turned out to be 4.7 on a scale of 10, some states performed moderately well by showing a better UIL score, have a look:
State | UIL |
---|---|
Karnataka | 7.8 |
Kerala | 7.3 |
Gujarat | 6.7 |
Maharashtra | 6.4 |
Uttar Pradesh | 6.2 |

By bringing in measures to increase UIL, Industries will get innovators that would contend equally with their global competitors, whereas, innovators will get a platform to get recognized at an early stage of their life.
