Chennai High Court has announced that the teachers who have not cleared the Teacher's Eligibility Test conducted by the state, will not be allowed to continue to work as teachers.

The Chennai High Court has taken a decision to unemploy teachers who have not cleared the Teacher’s Eligibility Test also known as TET. According to the reports, officials have to send notices to the teachers who have not cleared the TET till now and the reasons why the teachers have not cleared the TET till now.

Four teachers from a government-aided school in Thiruvannamalai district have filed a petition against the decision of the state government to fire the teachers who have not cleared the TET. According to the petition, the decision should be barred. It was also mentioned in the petition that the teachers must be given time until the results for TET 2019 has been released. The petition further stated that passing the TET was not important when the teachers joined.

Munusway, a special advocate who has appeared for the government had stated that the state of Tamil Nadu has been conducting the Teacher’s Eligibility Test for a couple of years now. They had been conducted between 2012 - 2014 and also during 2017 and 2018. He further states that the petition should be dismissed for the same reason. He also added that the TET is conducted twice in a year.

In a statement made by Justice S M Subramnayam, who was also the judge that conducted the enquiry, in this case, stated that there are more than 60,000 eligible candidates who are eagerly waiting for the acquiring a job as a teacher, even after complying the norms of clearing TET. He further added that the government should not be employing teachers who have not cleared the TET qualification. He goes on to explain the importance of why there should be a strict action on this regard stating that it is the matter of the children of India and that their education must not be compromised. He also adds that the teachers who have not cleared the Teacher’s Eligibility Test and that the decision was taken on a National level, therefore the importance of the decision increases tenfold.

As per the Tamil Nadu Employees Rules and Regulations Act, the authorities have the right to provide the teachers with a time limit, by the end of which the teachers have to provide them with the proof that they have cleared the TET. If the teacher fails to provide the proof of clearing the TET, the teacher will have to be removed.

The state government has given the teachers with 10 days to provide them with the explanations as to why they have not cleared TET till now. The authorities will have to send the teachers with a notice for the same in the two weeks time. A new order will be given after the explanations have been received and reviewed.
