V.S. Varadarajan and his wife Veda donated 1 million dollars to a university in the USA. The couple decided to donate the money in honour of Srinivasa Ramanujan who was a renowned mathematician in the early 1900s.
The amount will be used to form the ‘Ramanujan Visiting Professorship’ in his home department. Varadarajan used to specialise in automorphic forms which is a critical concept in mathematics as well as representation theory. The specialisation is also used in other theories like quantum physics and elementary particles. As of now, the President of the University of California along with the UCLA Academic Senate have to decide the formation of the chair.
