Lady Shri Ram College to Provide Hostels to First Year Students Only

The Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) announced on 19th June 2019, Wednesday, that from the academic session of 2019-2020 it will provide hostel facility only to the students of the first year. The reason for this move is to “promote inclusivity” in all the hostels so that a bigger number of students hailing from marginalised backgrounds can avail the hostel facility of the college.

The college released the official notice on its website on Wednesday. It said that hostels will be available to the first-year student for a tenure of one year only. At the end of their first year in May, students will have to vacate the hostels. Apart from that, the intake of third-year students in the college hostels will cease now.

The college authorities declared that this decision was taken as per the resolution of the governing body for promoting inclusivity by the implementation of constitutional reservations and for providing a secure environment to a massive number of students from different parts of the country in their first year. The principal of Lady Shri Ram College, Suman Sharma, was not available for throwing light on this topic further.

Ujjayini Ray, the hostel warden, said that no change will be made for the current batch of students of the second and third year as they were told that hostel facility will be provided to them for three years. She further said that an exception has been made for the students who were admitted under the category of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) and they will be allotted hostels under the previous policy of the college.

The warden added that it would not have been possible to provide students with hostel rooms for all three years. Moreover, the construction of more floors at the current hostel cannot be done and in spite of writing to the University Grants Commission (UGC), the authorities do not have enough funds to start the construction of another hostel.
