B.Sc Nursing Vs Post Basic B.Sc Nursing

Nursing is a course in which students are given training about several medical aspects and how to take care of patients. Candidates pursuing the course of nursing need to have in-depth knowledge about how to handle patients, take care of those who are ill or injured, medicines and their compositions, etc. Through nursing courses, students gain knowledge about how to treat a patient and offer precautionary care to everyone.

B.Sc Nursing (or Bachelor of Science in Nursing) is a programme at the graduation level with a duration of four years. Its objective is to demonstrate competency in the skills and knowledge of students who pursue the course so that they are equipped with the comprehensive nursing care that is based on the approach of problem-solving in hospitals and community. The course of B.Sc Nursing aims to develop critical thinking skills, competence and standards in students that are required for the practices of professional midwifery and nursing. This B.Sc programme involves nursing of the ill or wounded. The requirement of B.Sc nursing graduates is persistent in a lot of sectors and its demand is expected to constantly increase in the future as well. The B.Sc Nursing course in India is registered and controlled by the Indian Nursing Council. After completing B.Sc Nursing, the candidate can also go for postgraduation in the course and then he/ she can enrol for a doctorate degree (PhD) in Nursing as well.

Post Basic B.Sc Nursing is also an undergraduate course which traverses the path similar to that of B.Sc Nursing. The duration of Post Basic B.Sc Nursing is two years. Also referred to as P.B.B.Sc Nursing, the course provides a holistic mixture of hands-on training and classroom lectures. It aims at creating nurses who are healthcare professionals and experts in working at hospitals or outpatient facilities. Its objective is to train the students with as much experiential learning as possible so that they are skilled and gain mastery in providing the best care to patients by monitoring the medical condition of the patients, administering medications, communicating with doctors, maintaining records etc. Post Basic B.Sc Nursing also opens the doors for students to pursue higher studies in the course and go for masters or PhD.

Eligibility Criteria of B.Sc Nursing and Post Basic B.Sc Nursing

The eligibility criteria required to get admission in B.Sc Nursing is different from the eligibility criteria of Post Basic B.Sc Nursing. As the courses are different from each other, their selection process differs too. The eligibility criteria of B.Sc Nursing and the eligibility criteria of Post Basic B.Sc Nursing are given below.

B.Sc Nursing Eligibility Criteria:

  • The interested candidate must have completed his/ her higher secondary education (class 12th) from a school that comes under a recognised board.
  • It is mandatory for the candidate to have cleared the board exams of all the subjects in he/ she has in class 12th.
  • The candidate must have opted for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as the compulsory subjects in class 12th.
  • The admission of candidates in various medical colleges for the course of B.Sc Nursing is mostly done on the basis of competitive entrance exams that are held all across the nation.
  • The exams considered for conducting B.Sc Nursing admissions are NEET, AIIMS (B.Sc Nursing Admission Test), Banaras Hindu University (B.Sc Nursing Admission Test), etc. Many universities conduct their own entrance exams for admitting students to this course.

Post Basic B.Sc Nursing Eligibility Criteria:

  • The candidate must have completed his/ her class 12th (10 + 2) education from a school of a recognised board.
  • The candidates who have completed 10 + 1 are also eligible to apply for the course.
  • The applicant must belong to the science stream with Biology, Physics, and Chemistry as compulsory subjects.
  • The candidates must have registered themselves in the Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife (R.N.R.M.) with the State Nurses Registration Council.
  • The applicants must also have obtained a certificate or a three-year diploma in GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery).
  • The candidates must also have a proof of training given to them by the Indian Nursing Council or its equivalent in these domains:- O.T. Techniques, Leprosy Nursing, Ophthalmic Nursing, TB Nursing, Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Cancer Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Orthopedic Nursing
  • The male candidates who have not done midwifery in General Nursing and Midwifery should have a certificate in any of the nursing courses of about 6-9 months duration. It must be prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) in lieu of midwifery.
  • The admissions for Post Basic B.Sc Nursing courses are usually done on the basis of entrance exam conducted at the institute or university level. Some institutions also admit students directly on the basis of merit.

Note: The eligibility criteria of these courses may change according to the college or university conducting admissions.

The fee structure of B.Sc Nursing and Post Basic B.Sc Nursing is solely dependent upon the college or university in which a student enrols himself/ herself. Mostly the fee of these courses falls in the range which has been mentioned in the table below.
