Heritage Institute of Technology's Review and Verdict by CollegeDekho

Campus at a Glimpse

Cradled on the outskirts of Kolkata, the Heritage Institute of Technology (HIT Kolkata) provides a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The campus spans 8 acres and offers excellent infrastructure, creating an ideal setting for learning. HIT Kolkata takes pride in its academic excellence and impressive placement track record. Approximately 80% of students, across various courses, secure placements, and many even explore international internship and training opportunities. This success establishes HIT Kolkata as a promising choice for career-focused students. The institute offers a variety of engineering programs, such as BTech, MTech, MCA, and more. With a fee structure ranging from INR 3 to 4 lakhs, HIT Kolkata is accessible to a broad spectrum of students.

While HIT Kolkata is well-regarded for academics and placements, there are areas for improvement. The faculty-to-student ratio, while acceptable, could benefit from further enhancement to provide more personalized attention. Addressing the gender imbalance, where only 30% of students are female, would contribute to creating a more diverse and inclusive learning environment. Additionally, efforts should be made to strengthen placement opportunities for core engineering branches, ensuring equal success for all students.

The institute currently draws 34% of students from outside West Bengal. To enrich the campus experience, it could expand outreach initiatives and emphasize its strengths, attracting a more diverse student body. This step would contribute to a more vibrant and inclusive community at HIT Kolkata. Here is the most candid and reliable review and our verdict on the Heritage Institute of Technology.

Our Take:These rankings indicate that HITK's national position may not have seen significant improvement in recent years. However, it's important to consider some nuances:

  • NIRF rankings take into account factors such as teaching, learning resources, research, professional practice, graduation outcome, and outreach/inclusivity. A minor decline in one or two of these factors could impact the overall ranking.
  • India Today's rankings emphasize parameters like infrastructure, faculty-student ratio, placements, and industry interface. HITK's performance in these aspects might be slightly lower compared to some other institutes.

We think the recent rankings of the Heritage Institute of Technology in Kolkata are a bit mixed. Although it has a good reputation in West Bengal and achieves reasonable placements, the drop in national rankings raises concerns about its academic and research status. Consider this information along with factors like program strengths, faculty expertise, and costs before deciding about the Heritage Institute of Technology.

Heritage Institute of Technology Academia & Batch Size

HIT Kolkata follows a curriculum blended with theoretical and practical methodologies. However, as per students' feedback on Quora, there are concerns about the curriculum being outdated and failing to offer skill enhancement. Also, surprise tests in the name of internal examinations cause undue stress among students. Additionally, students report facing penalties for non-participation or scoring lower scores. According to the NIRF 2023 report the batch size of 2021-22 comprised 4,103 students. The student intake for the B.Tech programme was at par with the sanctioned intake. However, 54 students were admitted to the PG (3-year) course for which no seats were approved. Also, the batch size for the PG (2-year) programme was substantially lower than the sanctioned intake.

Our Take:

Curriculum design and assessment methods are the areas for enhancement in curriculum followed by HIT. Being an autonomous institution, HIT can bring reforms by adding skill enhancement programmes and activities to the curriculum. Additionally, the institute must ensure transparency regarding seat allocations and adhere to the sanctioned intake.

Activities: Students have mixed views regarding academic and extracurricular activities at HIT. While some praised the presence of different clubs, a few noticed a lack of activity within these clubs. Moreover, the organisation of fests and events is also limited as per students' feedback on Quora.

HIT Hackathon

Cafe/ Hang-out:HIT has three spacious canteens providing hygienic and tasty food to students. While a few students raised concerns about the average food quality of the canteens. Also, there are limited hangout places near the HIT campus as it is located away from the city.

Our Take:Student reviews provide a varied perspective on the Heritage Institute of Technology. While some students appreciate the spacious classrooms, library, and well-equipped auditoriums, others raise concerns about overcrowding, maintenance issues, and the quality of food and hostel facilities. Overall, student satisfaction appears to be influenced by individual priorities and experiences. The mixed reviews suggest that the Heritage Institute of Technology has invested in creating decent infrastructure. However, there's room for improvement, especially in maintaining facilities, improving hygiene standards in the canteen and mess, and providing more diverse and engaging hangout spaces. Addressing these concerns could significantly enhance the student experience and overall satisfaction at the Heritage Institute of Technology.

Heritage Institute of Technology Internships and Placements

HIT Kolkata Internships

According to the students, the Heritage Institute of Technology offers internship opportunities in companies like Amazon and Flipkart. However, sometimes extra work given in college doesn’t let students apply for those internships. According to student reviews, between 20% and 100% of the students get internships in different departments. Students of the B.Tech CS 2022 batch received internship opportunities at TCS, Cognizant, Capgemini, Goldman Sachs, and Amazon as per the reviews.

Heritage Institute of Technology Placements

In 2022, approximately 80% of Heritage Institute of Technology students successfully secured placements across various courses. According to the NIRF report for 2023, the median salary package offered to the B.Tech 2022 batch was in the range of INR 5-6 LPA. However, contrasting this data, based on student reviews, a significant majority reported receiving packages around INR 3.5-4 LPA. Notably, a mere 10% of students from core branches managed to secure placements as per reviews. For more clarity, let's delve into the HIT placement statistics for different courses.

Our Take:Based on a thorough examination of student feedback, the placement scenario at HIT Kolkata doesn’t appear promising. While the BTech CSE department boasts an above-average placement rate, the median package falls short of industry standards. Furthermore, a notable gap can be seen in providing enough opportunities to the students of core branches which requires the institute’s immediate attention.

Heritage Institute of Technology has a commendable regional presence with 76% of students hailing from the home state. However, the university can enhance the learning experience by attracting more students from other states. Also, no international student enrolled in the 2021-22 academic year as per the NIRF 2023 report. Our Take:Heritage Institute of Technology holds a somewhat average popularity in India, with only 34% of students coming from other states. Expanding its reach might be beneficial for HIT Kolkata! Additionally, the student body composition at HIT is largely male-dominated, with 70% being male students. There is a need for initiatives to achieve a better gender balance, promoting a more diverse environment. The institute is involved in programs like Girl Up! and Women in Engineering Day to foster inclusivity. While their website displays testimonials from various student groups, including international students, more transparency and open communication about diverse data and student perspectives would be valuable to understanding HIT Kolkata's progress and potential challenges.

Heritage Institute of Technology Faculty/College Administration & Management

On Quora, many students have expressed dissatisfaction with the faculty, highlighting issues like lack of effective teaching, unhelpful attitudes towards them, and even allegations of insulting behaviour. However, a few students acknowledged that while some faculty members may not meet expectations, there are also good ones.

Our Take:Heritage Institute of Technology has dedicated faculty members in specific areas, yet there's a need for improvement in teaching methods, accessibility, and addressing variations in quality across departments. The administration shows efforts in supporting students and organizing activities, but concerns about bureaucracy, transparency, and responsiveness require attention.

Heritage Institute of Technology Location

Set against the serene backdrop of southern Kolkata, Heritage Institute of Technology is located at Chowbaga Road, Anandapur, East Kolkata Township, Kolkata - 700107. The college is well-connected with the rest of the city by road and public transportation. However, it can be a bit inconvenient for students living in the city and other parts of the city to travel daily.  Also, the area is less developed compared to the city which gives fewer hangout options to the students.

Anandpur bus stand is the nearest bus stand, about 1 km from the campus. The nearest railway station is Ballygunge Railway Station, which is 6 km away from the campus. Furthermore, the nearest airport, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum, Kolkata, is located a bit far (15 km) from the institute.

Our Take:

Pros:

  • Convenience: Positioned near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and Basanti Expressway, making it easy to reach central Kolkata and suburbs.
  • Nearby Amenities: Close to hospitals, banks, and shopping centres, offering easy access to essential services.
  • Serene Surroundings: Surrounded by greenery, providing a peaceful and less hectic environment compared to central Kolkata.
  • Ample Space: The campus is spacious with open areas, creating a calm atmosphere and allowing room for movement.
  • Improving Infrastructure: The neighbouring area is undergoing development, potentially enhancing future facilities and accessibility.

Cons:

  • Distance from Popular Hubs: Not in the centre, which might mean longer commutes to access cultural or entertainment options.
  • Limited Public Transportation: Although there are bus routes, the connectivity might not be as frequent or convenient as in central areas.
  • Few Local Attractions: It is not near major tourist spots or historical landmarks.
  • Traffic Congestion: During busy hours, the nearby expressways can get crowded, affecting commute times.

Heritage Institute of Technology: Expectation vs Reality CLD Verdict!

Heritage Institute of Technology is a well-known name in West Bengal for engineering courses. Indeed, it offers all the required facilities and a well-maintained infrastructure. The students are left wanting more exposure and better job opportunities. Further improvement in terms of maintaining a balanced gender ratio, recruiting better faculty and organising co-curricular activities are needed. Looking at the return on investment (ROI), HIT weighs heavier on the balance when compared to the average package offered.

Situated in a peaceful area, the college is quite far from the city centre, with few local attractions and limited public transport. The information and student opinions are not very clear, leading to questions about inclusivity and representation. There's also a decline in the rankings, raising concerns about academic standards. Students have expressed worries about crowded classrooms, occasional maintenance issues, and hygiene problems in the canteen. Quality and accessibility seem to vary across departments, leaving some students dissatisfied. Bureaucracy and a lack of responsiveness from the administration are also concerns raised by some.

Final Verdict: The Heritage Institute of Technology in Kolkata has potential, but it is essential to manage expectations. Research specific programs, evaluate your priorities (considering city life versus academic focus), and gather thorough student feedback before deciding. Keep in mind that "reality" is subjective, and your experience might be different. One must approach with cautious optimism and an open mind.
