Difference Between DMLT & BMLT

One of the crucial components of the medical industry is the medical laboratory technologists/technicians. Those who graduate from a Medical Laboratory Technology course are trained to handle laboratory equipment that is used to collect samples from the patients and analysed using different techniques, to provide specialists with the information, which further allows them to provide an apt solution to the patients.

Among the undergraduate courses that are offered to aspirants across India, it is easy to be confused between pursuing a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) or a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT). Being a paramedical course, the curriculum of BMLT and DMLT will purely focus on learning how to diagnose diseases, offer probable treatment options and provide steps on prevention of possible diseases or illness, based on the information gathered through laboratory tests.

As can be seen from the table above, the differences between the two degrees are almost negligible. However, one cannot assume that both the degree are the same. While the subjects taught to a student might remain similar, the experience and skills gained through each of the courses will differ. This will further affect the career opportunities available to aspirants.

BMLT Vs DMLT: What After Graduation?

While the difference between the two degrees might be slight, students who graduate from one or the other will begin to witness the difference when they start to choose their future path. For a course in Medical Laboratory Technology, it has been witnessed that pursuing higher education increases the career prospects of a student.

Like any other PG degree or higher education degree, candidates who wish to further enhance their knowledge in the field, they will be required to complete a full-fledged degree. The additional year of education in Bachelors will allow BMLT graduates to pursue MMLT and increase the scope of a career in Medical Laboratory Technology.

As shown in the table, the job profiles available to the students who graduate from DMLT will be similar to that of a BMLT graduate, the responsibilities that are assigned to BMLT graduates will be higher than those of a DMLT graduate. In a professional setting, the experience, knowledge and skills gained by the graduate will subsequently affect the career prospects of the candidate.

However, this is not to say that a DMLT graduate will never be able to receive the same amount of responsibilities. A DMLT graduate will also be able to carry out the same tasks and responsibilities, which will be assigned to a BMLT graduate. However, the career opportunities that will be available for a BMLT graduate will be higher than it would be for DMLT graduates, especially if the candidate wishes to pursue higher education.

The average initial salary or packages that are offered to both BMLT and DMLT graduates will heavily depend on the experience, skills and knowledge that the graduate has gained in the field. The initial salaries that are offered to an MLT graduate can range anywhere between ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 per month.

A host of parameters and factors come into play with regard to the pay scale offered to an MLT graduate. The place of employment, job profile, the specialization opted and the experience of the candidate, all affect the overall pay package of the candidate.
