Getting into IIT Hyderabad is an accomplishment in and of itself. Still, you need to know if it is right for you. We have curated the most honest review of IIT Hyderabad that will help you make an informed decision.

IIT Hyderabad Review and Verdict

Campus at a Glimpse

Being a prominent institute, IIT Hyderabad is a dream come true for engineering students in India. Since its inception in 2008, IIT Hyderabad has been consistent in being one of the best engineering colleges in India. It has been consistently ranked in the top 10 institutes in India for engineering, according to NIRF, making it one of the most coveted institutes for science and technology in the country. The best of the best is what signifies IIT Hyderabad. It is also UGC-recognised and accredited by NAAC & NBA.

IIT Hyderabad courses are available at the UG level in various disciplines such as Engineering, Applied Science, Design, and others. The institute also offers PG-level and doctoral programmes in several streams. The MTech programmes are offered in different modes and durations to meet the growing demand for postgraduate-level professionals in the country. The faculty-to-student ratio at IIT Hyderabad is relatively favourable at 1:14. This is likely due to the fact that the institute is still growing and developing, and it has been able to attract a large number of talented faculty members.

The relationship between IIT Hyderabad and Japanese universities and industries extends beyond academic and research collaborations. That is why Japanese architecture is a hallmark of some of the iconic buildings on its campus.  IITH creates a unique holistic education ecosystem that offers interactive learning, a highly flexible academic structure, a cutting-edge research foundation, strong industry collaboration, and entrepreneurship. This environment enables students and faculty to turn their dreams into realities through its entrepreneurship programmes.

However, there are still some gaps to be filled by this newly founded IIT. When asked, students have said that the institute is located in a remote area named Kandi. The area is filled with mostly industries, and there are rarely any amenities available near campus. Apart from this, students have also complained about unhygienic food being served in the hostel mess.

IIT Hyderabad NIRF Ranking: From Good to Great!

IIT Hyderabad has retained its overall NIRF Ranking 2023 at 14th position. At the same time, IIT Hyderabad has maintained its position within the top 10 ranks (8th in 2023) among the technical institutes in the country and as the best among the second-generation IITs. The improvement in ranking is also evident in the research category.

Our Take

The steady improvement in IIT Hyderabad's overall NIRF ranking signifies that the institute is making significant progress in all areas, including teaching, learning, research, and innovation. The fact that IIT Hyderabad has been able to maintain its position in the top 10 list of the best engineering colleges since 2018 is a testament to its commitment to excellence.

IIT Hyderabad Academia & Batch

Through the IIT Hyderabad curriculum, students are also provided the flexibility to explore their area of interest and potentially pursue a minor or double major in a discipline that is not their own. IIT Hyderabad also allows students to collaborate with their faculty to get involved in cutting-edge research and earn honors degrees in their respective fields. The courses are designed on the basis of a credit-based system.

The very foundation of IIT Hyderabad is based on research and innovation. That is why IIT Hyderabad is the only college in India known to produce a number of patents and publications every year. Also, IIT Hyderabad is known to support startups and encourage students to innovate. To pursue this, the institute offers an open minor programme in entrepreneurship for every student. Several of these courses are offered by industrialists who are entrepreneurs of the country themselves. IITH has been successful in establishing partnerships with prominent academic institutions worldwide.

Total Courses

IIT Hyderabad admission is conducted for a total of 9 undergraduate programmes, 20 postgraduate programmes, and 5 doctoral programmes. Two degrees are offered at the UG level, namely BTech and BDes. For aspiring engineers and designers, undergraduate programmes in B.Tech and B.Des lay a strong foundation. Postgraduate-level pursuits are equally compelling, with M.Tech, M.Des, M.Sc, and MA programmes spanning fields like science, engineering, liberal arts, and design. IIT Hyderabad offers an Executive M.Tech programme with a Biodesign specialisation, focusing on groundbreaking innovation at the intersection of engineering and life sciences. Additionally, international students have seamless admission pathways through ICCR and Study in India, with a dedicated 2-year M.Tech programme specifically tailored for them. To further enhance accessibility, IIT Hyderabad even offers online M.Tech and M.Des programmes, providing flexibility and expanding the reach of its renowned education.

No. of Seats

Over 400 seats are available for the BTech courses at IIT Hyderabad. These seats are divided into multiple disciplines. For instance, 30 seats are available for Artificial Intelligence, 40 seats are available for Chemical Engineering, 60 seats are available for Mechanical Engineering, and so on.

Our Take

When we talk about seat intake, it is evident that there are an average number of seats available for engineering courses. However, this can still be justified given the prominence of this institute. The disciplines offered by the institutes are quite vast, so we will give a plus point for that. The institute also focuses primarily on research and innovation, which are crucial for future generations in this country.

Our Take

IIT Hyderabad placement statistics are excellent, which shows the institute cares about the future of its students. The highest package received by the students was INR 63.78 LPA in 2023. Some of top-tier companies are recruiters for IIT Hyderabad, including Amazon, Flipkart, HDFC bank, etc. It is evident that IIT Hyderabad students are regularly placed in top companies around the world. However, the overall placement percentage was only 74.90%. So, the institute can work on improving the numbers. At the same time, the placement rate for some courses, like BDes, can also be improved.

IIT Hyderabad Diversity & Representation

IIT Hyderabad excels when it comes to gender diversity. As per a news report, the institute has introduced special incentives to boost gender diversity and has a goal of having at least 25% of women students admitted to the 4-year BTech programme. Through this programme, a 25% tuition fee waiver will be provided to female students.

Our Take

The gender diversity programme at IIT Hyderabad is quite impressive. The special fee waiver for female students will further encourage them to join the institute. By supporting more females to join its engineering courses, IIT Hyderabad can help create a more diverse and inclusive engineering workforce in India.

IIT Hyderabad Location

IIT Hyderabad is located in Sangareddy district in the state of Telangana. It is about 50 kilometres west of Hyderabad city. The campus is spread over 576 acres of land. IIT Hyderabad is located in a rural area, but it is close to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the National Highway 65. This makes it easy to commute to and from Hyderabad.

IIT Hyderabad: Expectation vs Reality CollegeDekho Verdict

We cannot deny the fact that IIT Hyderabad is one of the best colleges in India. Even after the institute is newly built, it has secured its place in the top 10 engineering colleges in the country. This shows its potential to become the number one institute in the future. To acquire this, the institute is also consistently introducing new strategies. There are a number of factors that make IIT Hyderabad an ideal institute for students, namely its research programmes, NIRF rankings, updated curriculum, etc.

However, it is also crucial for the institute to focus on its student's satisfaction and health. The institute should put in place some measures to make sure the students breathe fresh air and are protected from the industry’s waste. Being a hub of research itself, we do not think it will be difficult for IIT Hyderabad to achieve this.
