As of 2023, the campus offers a mix of positive and negative aspects.

Campus at a Glimpse

IIT Patna is located in a tranquil setting that is suited to academic pursuits. The faculty is extremely skilled and committed to providing students with higher education in their respective fields. However, just like any other institution, there are certain contraries! According to students, the campus, while continually developing, nonetheless has certain infrastructure constraints. According to the NIRF Engineering Ranking 2023, IIT Patna is ranked 41st with a score of 55.03. IIT Patna is ranked 66 in the NIRF Overall Ranking 2023, with a score of 49.79. We can see that IIT Patna dropped 7 ranks from the previous year in 2023. 

This is a big decline, and it is important to understand what causes may have led to it. There might be a plethora of reasons why IIT Patna has slipped in the rankings. It seems to us that the college has not kept up with the pace of development of other institutes and private universities. 

IIT Patna Academia & Batch Size

IIT Patna is widely regarded as the country's second-generation IIT. The institute has grown steadily since its inception, and they are now offering B.Tech, MSc/M.Tech and PhD programmes in 6 engineering departments: Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (CBE), Civil and Environmental (CEE), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electrical Engineering (EE), Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME), and Mechanical Engineering (ME) and 3 basic sciences departments (Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics), and a Humanities and Social Science (HSS) department. 

IIT Patna Academia:

These academic departments are actively striving towards excellent teaching and research, carving out a niche for themselves on a national and worldwide scale. This is evident from the presence of high-impact journal publications from IIT Patna, the formation of IPR, the development of products, and the promotion of the startup ecosystem through incubation, collaboration with industry, R&D, and prestigious academic institutions globally. 

Our Take:

There is no question that IIT Patna has an excellent academic reputation both nationally and internationally. The institute provides diverse B.Tech, MSc, and PhD degrees in engineering and science, taught by 100+ highly trained and experienced faculty with in-depth subject knowledge and expertise. In addition, the institute has a strong research culture, with faculty members doing cutting-edge research in a range of subjects. 

However, there are several areas where IIT Patna’s academics need to improve. Some students, for example, have complained that the coursework is too excessive and that the staff is not always available to assist them. According to sources, some faculty members show favouritism towards students for their research work and projects.  

IIT Patna Batch Size:

The batch size at IIT Patna has continuously increased. The batch size in 2023 is estimated to be about 1800+ students. This is a pretty big batch size, and it has consequences for the institute. At IIT Patna, the faculty-to-student ratio is around 14.6, which is better than most institutes and universities in the country. 

The female student population on campus is 24%, while the male student population is 76%. This imbalanced student ratio is a slight bummer and an area of concern for the institute. This indeed tells that the institute is not taking much initiative to attract more and more female students to study at IIT Patna. Furthermore, 78% of all students at IIT Patna come from outside the state. Hence, students are more exposed to different cultures and perspectives, which helps them to develop a broader worldview.

IIT Patna Infrastructure

The institute takes pride in creating infrastructure that is well-maintained and adequate for student needs. Let us look at how:

• Classrooms: IIT Patna's classrooms are generally well-equipped with modern amenities, such as projectors, whiteboards, and comfortable seating.

Established in 2008, IIT Patna is a relatively new institute, and it is still developing its infrastructure. The institute, on the other hand, is dedicated to providing students with a high-quality education and a well-rounded student experience. In addition, the institute is investing in its infrastructure to support its academic offerings. 

Despite the institute's commitment to providing students with a high-quality education and a well-rounded student experience, there is always another side to the coin. 

• According to reports, some students have claimed that some of the older classrooms are not well-maintained and can be overcrowded. 
• Despite the fact that the institute has a high-speed Wi-Fi network that spans the whole campus. Some students, however, have reported that the internet speed might be poor at times, particularly during busy hours. 
• Although the institute has many buses that travel throughout the day, some students have claimed that they are not always regular or trustworthy.
• In general, the hostels are clean and well-kept. Some students, however, have claimed that the rooms are small and furnished with old furniture and that the food quality is not always satisfactory.

This clearly states that IIT Patna students have a very good chance of getting an internship at a top company, either in India or abroad. This is a testament to the high quality of education and training that IIT Patna provides its students.

IIT Patna has a dedicated Placement Cell that handles all placements taking place on campus. The Placement Cell acts as a bridge between students and organizations, helping them to connect with each other and find the best fit. According to the NIRF Data 2023, out of 446 students in a batch, 298 students were placed in top reputed organizations in the IIT Patna placement drive. This means that over 67% of the students were placed in top companies. 

The median salary package for UG 4-year students was INR 20 LPA, while the median salary package for PG 2-year students was INR 12 LPA.

This means that the average student at IIT Patna can expect to earn a salary of INR 20 LPA after graduating. Moreover, we feel that these statistics are a testament to the strong placement record of IIT Patna. The institute's graduates are highly sought-after by leading companies around the world. The placement cell is also doing a good job placing the majority of students at IIT Patna in top companies with good salaries.

Our Take on IIT Patna’s Course-wise Placement

Overall, IIT Patna has a high placement record, with more than 90% of eligible students employed in internships and employment by 2023. The median annual salary package for UG 4-year students was INR 20 lakhs, and the median annual income package for PG 2-year students was INR 12 lakhs.

According to sources, the IIT Patna campus aspires to be gender-neutral. We feel that IIT Patna's global MOUs benefit both students and teachers. College Administration

Students and teachers of IIT Patna have a high appreciation for the college administration. The administration is open to student feedback and is continually looking for ways to improve the overall student experience. Furthermore, based on our research and student input, the administration is generally devoted to providing students with a high-quality education. The administration also encourages students to engage in research and innovation. 

Students and faculty, on the other hand, feel that the college administration should work more to enhance and maintain campus infrastructure and facilities. Some students had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of student input in decision-making. Faculty assistance is another area where the administration should improve. Administrative assistance and resources should be made more available to faculty.

IIT Patna Location

IIT Patna is located in Bihta, a town around 30 km from Patna, Bihar's capital. The institute is located in a somewhat rural region, and there isn't much to do around. In other words, IIT Patna provides its students with well-equipped facilities as well as a pleasant and tranquil campus life. Students often laud the lack of distractions from city life, as well as the low cost of living. 

Modes of Travel:

Since the university is located in a very rural area, there aren't many transportation choices in the area. Auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, city buses, and taxis/cabs are all options for getting around the city. For travelling outside the city region, the following forms of transportation are available:

The monsoon season lasts from July through October, and the region gets a lot of rain during this period.

Our Take:

Some students love the campus's peace and quiet and the fact that they are not distracted by the rush and bustle of city life. Others think the location is too remote and miss the ease of being close to shopping, restaurants, and other facilities. Some students also say that the lack of transportation choices makes getting to and from campus difficult. However, with some forethought, it is possible to get around.

The fact that IIT Patna is located in a very rural environment indicates that the school is devoted to providing students with a high-quality education and research facilities, even if it means foregoing some of the city's comforts. The weather in Patna can prove fairly difficult, particularly during the summers. The weather, on the other hand, is controllable, and pupils may acclimatise to it with time. We believe that IIT Patna is dedicated to making the Bihat region a more appealing location to live and work.
