OU Grading System

OU Grading System: Osmania University Hyderabad was founded in 1917 and currently consists of around 8 campus institutions, 12 faculties, 5 constituent colleges, and 53 departments. In addition, it boasts over 720 affiliated colleges, 9 academic institutes, and 16 research centres. The university has received recognition from the UGC and an 'A+' grade on its NAAC reaccreditation. By the NIRF 2023 Rankings, Osmania University was placed 36th in the 'University' category and 64th in the 'Overall' category. Moreover, Osmania Hyderabad is rated 125th in the QS World University Ranking for 2024 under the category "Southern Asia".

OU Grading System follows the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) and uses a 10-point letter-grade scale, ranging from “OS to D”, where ‘OS’ (10-grade points) is the highest and ‘D’ (5-grade points) is the lowest grade, and an ‘F’ (zero grade points) indicates failure for below 39 marks. The university offers multiple diplomas, certificates, UG, PG, and PhD courses in various streams such as Humanities, Teaching, Engineering, Commerce, IT & Software, Science, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medicine & Healthcare. In this article, we will thoroughly discuss the Osmania University Grading System, Osmania University passing marks, and more.

OU Grading System for UG Courses Under CBCS

As discussed, every department at the university uses a choice-based credit system or CBCS. Outlined below are some significant guidelines of the Osmania University Grading System for undergraduate courses under CBCS:

  • All UG departments in the colleges of Science, Social Sciences, Arts, and Commerce of the constituent and affiliated institutions of OU are required to participate in CBCS commencing in the 2016-17 academic year.
  • A candidate's grades are converted into both grade points and credit points; each paper or program has a fixed amount of credits. An aspirant's cumulative grade point average (CGPA) is a measure of their overall academic performance over the six semesters of their bachelor's degree, whereas their semester grade point average (SGPA) represents their achievement in a given semester.
  • The course selections for every UG programme are tailored to the changing needs of industry, the job market, and social issues.
  • The CBCS system employs tests, assignments, and other internal assessments to monitor students' progress throughout each semester.

Letter Grades & Grade Points in OU Grading System

The grade letter, per the Osmania University grading system, is an indicator of a candidate's success in an area of study or semester-wise exams. There is a variety of grades for each grade letter. It is a representation of the real course or exam grades that a candidate was awarded. It is symbolised by a grade letter of O, A, B, C, D, E, or F. However, if a candidate is absent from an exam, the grade letter Ab is used in place of the grade letter in the memo. The OG University grading system assigns a letter grade for every programme or paper, with each grade letter carrying a specific weight in Grade Point. Check out the following table for detailed information:

OU Grading System: Grade Improvement and Course Completion

The guidelines below will help students maximise their grades through the Osmania University grading system. This will enable applicants to attempt the examination again, enhance their scores, and achieve better results than the first time.

  • Once they have passed a theory paper, students may retake the subject just once to raise their mark, provided they pay the university-mandated fees. Such applicants are only permitted to make one attempt for an extra exam during the subsequent examination for the current semester.
  • If a student increases their grade, their new grade will be considered for determining their GPA.
  • The upgraded grade can't go over an A+. A grade improvement of this kind will not be taken into account for rank, distinction, or prize/medal awards.
  • If the applicant's grade remains unchanged, consideration will be given to their earlier grade.  For the internal evaluation, seminars, and project work, students will not be permitted to increase their scores.

In the end, the OU Grading System includes the requirement that applicants taking exams during any semester as regular students attend 75% of the lectures and the separate practical classes for each subject covered in the course syllabus. Additionally, if students in any degree exam fail to receive the required minimum grade in any subject, they will only be allowed to sit in the subjects that they failed that semester.
