BIT Sindri Review and Verdict by CollegeDekho

Campus at a Glance

Birsa Institute of Technology Sindri, the erstwhile Bihar Institute of Technology Sindri, is one of the senior-most engineering and technological institutes in India. It started functioning as the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in 1949 at Patna. It shifted its campus to Sindri in 1950. From being a subsidiary of Ranchi College to an affiliated engineering college of Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribagh, BIT Sindri is at present under the affiliation of the Jharkhand University of Technology, Ranchi (JUT). BIT Sindri is wholly owned and administered by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt of Jharkhand, Ranchi. It is a fully residential college and provides accommodation for students, teaching and non-teaching staff.

Course-wise, the institute offers B.Tech courses in 10 disciplines of engineering, namely mechanical, electrical, metallurgy, production, chemical, electronics and communications, civil, mining, computer science, and information technology along with M.Tech and PhD. There are over 20+ degree courses available at BIT Sindri. The courses are approved by AICTE and most UG programmes are accredited by the NBA as well. Admission in B.Tech courses is done through JEE Main and BIT Sindri admissions in the M.Tech programme are based on GATE scores.

Facilities available at BIT Sindri include multimedia auditoriums, seminar rooms, an e-library, modern laboratories and more. Many infrastructural developments are currently undergoing. Furthermore, the placement statistics of the institute are commendable. A basic overview is not enough for a student to decide whether to take admission in BIT Sindri. Here is an unbiased review and verdict article that will help you gain more insight into the functioning of the institute!

Our Take:

If we compare the last three years' NIRF Ranking for the engineering category, BIT Sindri took a steep dive. The institute slipped to the 251-300 rank band in 2022 from 201-250 in 2022 and finally, in 2023, it failed to secure any ranking. Despite being one of the oldest engineering colleges in India, it is alarming that BIT Sindri failed to secure NIRF Ranking 2023.

Our Take:

The R&D building, a lecture & seminar complex and a student activity center are currently under construction at the campus. Even though BIT Sindri boasts about adding new infrastructure, there are a few areas where improvement is needed. Students on an online platform (Google Reviews) shared that the AC in the hall is non-functional and there is no proper ventilation. They further added that many of the chairs in the auditorium are broken. The hostel washrooms are not regularly cleaned. They have expressed the need to improve the mess food. Also, if we look at the hostel mess fees mentioned in the table above, the fee of INR 3,990 per month is a bit high given the quality of food offered. Also, security in hostels is a bit of a concern. According to a leading newspaper report, senior students have beaten up junior students and created a scene of chaos for over an hour. Here is a news snippet of the same.

BIT Sindri Diversity and Demographics

The following data related to BIT Sindri students' gender ratio and demographic diversity has been taken from the NIRF Report 2024:

Our Take:

If we analyse the gender ratio index, the percentage of female students as compared to males is less. With only 18% of female students in the B.Tech programme and 16.01% females in the M.Tech programme, BIT Sindri must take steps to increase the enrollment of more female students in these courses.

Our Take:

Analysing the data above, the demographic ratio of BIT Sindri students is not balanced. With only 5.75% of students in the B.Tech programme from outside Jharkhand, there is a lot of scope of improvement in this area. Students should be given the needed exposure to meet students from various cultural backgrounds which will contribute more to their holistic development.

BIT Sindri Faculty and Administration/Management

BIT Sindri currently employs 187 faculty. There are 30 female professors and 157 male professors. Most of them are M.Tech and PhD degree holders. Tabulated below is the list of professors, associate professors and assistant professors at BIT Sindri:

Regular Professors

Contractual Professors

Visiting Professors

117

5

Our Take:

The overall student-to-faculty ratio stands at 18:1, which is favorable. However, as the batch size varies from course to course, there is a difference in student-to-faculty ratio per batch. Also, after analysing the students' feedback across multiple platforms, BIT Sindri should employ more professors. However, they are satisfied with the quality of teaching provided by BIT Sindri professors.

Regarding the administration and management functioning of the institution, students have not highlighted any grave concerns that they have faced during their course of study.

BIT Sindri Location

Located at Dhanbad Road, Singri in Jharkhand, BIT Sindri is in a prime location easily accessible by local transport. The campus is at a distance of 28 km from the nearest railway station, Dhanbad Junction Railway Station. The closest airport is Munda Airport in Ranchi which is 160 km away from the campus.

Our Take:

BIT Sindri is located in an environment perfect for the students. However, with airways being the convenient option for out-station students, the distance is far with over 3 hour's journey to the campus from the airport. This can be a possible reason leading to comparatively fewer students enrolled from outside Jharkhand in BIT Sindri.
