It was established in 1971 with a mission to provide higher education to socially and economically backward and underprivileged students of Jharkhand. Currently, Gossner College offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses across four major streams, arts, commerce, science and vocational education. Additionally, various certificate programmes in French, German, Spanish, yoga, radio jockey, jewellery design and capital market are offered to develop employability skills in students.

Moreover, the college claims to offer a comprehensive curriculum blending theoretical and practical knowledge in a balanced manner. Gossner College Ranchi not only offers traditional courses such as BA, MA, B.Com and M.Com but also new generation courses such as B.Sc CA and IT, B.Sc Biotechnology and BMC VP providing a variety of options to choose from. While the curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive education relevant to the competitive job market, a gap exists between design and implementation, raising concerns about its effectiveness. Nevertheless, the high intake of students has resulted in the recruitment of young faculty who seem inexperienced in providing the best teaching and learning environment. Gossner College Ranchi should focus on training its faculty and implementing a balanced curriculum.

Gossner College Ranchi has 45 classrooms, 15 laboratories, a library and other facilities as per the SSR Report 2020. Let’s have a look at the details below. 

Classroom: The college has well-maintained classrooms with 8 of them equipped with ICT-enabled facilities as per SSR report 2020. 

Seminar/ Conference hall: There are three halls, a seminar hall and a conference hall well-equipped with multimedia facilities. 

Library: The library is well-stocked with nearly 35,000+ books and other reading materials. Gossner College library provides students with facilities such as Wi-Fi, NLIST Inflibnet and a seating area for 60 individuals.  

Internet: According to the students, Wi-Fi facilities are available for students but limited to libraries and labs only. This is an issue raised by the students. 

Hostel: The college provides hostel facilities to male and female students. However, it faces challenges due to the limited capacity of hostels and can’t provide accommodation to all the students. 

Activities: Various curricular and extracurricular activities are organised by the college such as  seminars, discussions, guest lectures, educational tours, field visits, youth fest and different departmental and cell events.

Canteen: The college offers a canteen facility on campus and the students have shared mixed reviews on it. Some of them liked the food items while others didn’t. 

Our Take:

The infrastructure of Gossner College Ranchi offers adequate facilities and equipment. However, further improvements in hostels, canteen and IT infrastructure can be made to cater to the needs of students.

Internships: 

As per the AQAR report 2022, only three courses offered at Gossner College Ranchi include experiential learning through internship/ project or fieldwork. A total of 128 students undertook internship/ project or fieldwork which is too low compared to the huge number of students enrolled in the college. Furthermore, the students on multiple review platforms shared that the college offers extremely limited internship opportunities on campus.

The internship and placement scenario of the Gossner College Ranchi is highly unimpressive. The college completely lags in providing adequate exposure and job opportunities to the students. Moreover, the negative reviews of the students speak a lot about the poor efforts of the college in providing ample opportunities. The institution should take some steps towards fostering industry relations and getting students placed in leading organisations.

Gossner College Ranchi has a large student population of more than 17K which comprises students from Jharkhand and other states of India. The student body is highly populated with students belonging to Jharkhand (95.1%) representing its regional popularity. The scholars hailing from other states of India account for only 4.9% which results in less interstate diversity on the campus. Moreover, the gender ratio shows the presence of a higher male population (60%) compared to a female population (40%). However, the female ratio looks decent considering the cultural and traditional landscape of Jharkhand. Overall, Gossner College has a high regional diversity compared to inter-state diversity which isn’t beneficial for students in terms of overall development. 

Gossner College Ranchi Faculty

The faculty of Gossner College is a mixed bag with some highly knowledgeable teachers and some unprofessional ones as per student’s feedback on Quora. While a few students complained about the poor teaching quality and behaviour of the some teachers, others appreciated the faculty for their support and guidance. It looks like a tie here! 

Moreover, the college has a total of 70 faculty members according to the NIRF 2023 report which is extremely less when compared to the total student body. Also, the majority of teachers held postgraduate degrees and only a few had PhDs. 

Our Take:

The research and reviews portray a clear picture of Gossner College Ranchi’s faculty. While a handful of teachers are qualified and experienced, the majority of them are unskilled and lack genuine intent of teaching. Moreover, the ratio of student-teachers at Gossner College is excessively high, around 250 students under the assistance of a single teacher. This shows the college’s inability to provide adequate attention and support to its students, potentially hindering their academic growth and overall educational experience.

While Gossner College Ranchi serves as a beacon of hope for tribal and economically weaker students of Jharkhand, it seems struggling to meet the student’s expectations. One can see its efforts towards the implementation of an updated curriculum and providing exposure opportunities at a reasonable fee structure. On the other hand, large student intake has hindered the quality of education offered at the institution. Due to overcrowding, the ratio of student-teacher in the classroom has reached an alarming level and the quality of teaching appears compromised. The college is aware of these challenges and will be implementing changes hopefully in the coming years. Overall, Gossner College seems a nice choice for underprivileged students belonging to Jharkhand.
