Formally known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering, VNIT changed its name to Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology in 2007 after the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007. The institute was established in the year 1960 as a public engineering institute. In 2002, VNIT Nagpur was granted deemed-to-be-university status by the UGC. Spread across an area of 214 acres, the institute holds its place among the top engineering institutes in Nagpur. The institute has also been approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).
VNIT Nagpur courses are offered at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. The courses are offered by the institute in the Engineering & Technology, Architecture, and Science streams. VNIT Nagpur's popular courses include BTech, MTech, BArch, MSc, and PhD. The BTech courses are available in multiple disciplines, including Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, CSE, ECE, Mechanical Engineering, etc. The total course fee for BTech at VNIT Nagpur is INR 5,48,000, and the total course fee for MTech at VNIT Nagpur is INR 3,35,000.
However, just like every other institute, not everything about VNIT Nagpur is perfect. If the review of students is to be believed, there is no internship available for the students. Even if someone gets an internship, there is no stipend provided. Moreover, the faculty of this institute also do not have a good reputation. As per the students, most of the professors at VNIT Nagpur are mediocre and not very experienced. Due to this, sometimes students have to rely on self-study.

Curriculum Design
The Academic Rule Book is made available to all students and is also available on the institute's website. Academic Peer Review of each academic programme is conducted with the help of faculty members from IITs, IISc, SPA, etc. The suggestions received under this review programme are implemented through the respective Boards of Studies. Formal accreditation of various academic programmes is done with the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Five B.Tech and five M.Tech programmes are already accredited.
Academic Evaluation
All the programmes at VNIT Nagpur are conducted on a semester basis. Students need to register for courses each semester before the exam. Courses are categorised into 3 categories: core, elective open, and humanities courses. Course evaluation at the institute is primarily based on two sessional tests, an end-semester examination, and class assessments. Laboratory course evaluation is done on a continuous basis through quizzes, assignments, seminars, etc.
VNIT Nagpur uses a relative credit point-based grading system on a ten-point scale. Grades are awarded based on assessment, and there is no provision for improving grades by re-registering in the course. Students who receive an FF (fail grade) in a course must re-register for it in the subsequent semester.
Student performance is indicated by CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average). Students are not awarded any divisions or percentages. A student is eligible for the award of a degree after completing all requirements set by the institute in terms of credits, CGPA, and type of courses completed.

VNIT Nagpur admission to BTech and BArch courses is done through the JEE Main counselling process conducted by JoSAA. Admission to the MTech programmes at VNIT Nagpur is done through the GATE exam. The JAM entrance exam is conducted to shortlist candidates for admission to the MSc programmes.

As per our evaluation of the infrastructure, VNIT Nagpur has a well-developed infrastructure that meets the needs of its students and faculty. The placement at VNIT Nagpur is good. However, the institute also needs to offer internships to the students with a stipend. However, there are some top recruiters that visit campus for placements, which is a plus point for the institute. The overall placement percentage at the institute stood at above 90% in 2022.
