IIT after 12th Commerce and Arts: Right from its establishment in the year 1951, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has earned tremendous goodwill and has made itself more of a brand than just a mere institute. With an excellent placement record and a marvelous alumni network, IITs are rightly considered to be the premier engineering institutes in India.
Getting admission to one of the best engineering colleges in India is like a dream come true for every engineering aspirant and their struggle for this starts from the school level. Students looking forward to admission in these institutes have to appear for the JEE Mains and the JEE Advanced entrance examinations and once they clear these exams, they are further shortlisted for one of the Top Colleges of IIT in India on the basis of their ranks. While IITs have been primarily set up for engineering courses, they have added their own Humanities Social Sciences, and Management departments over the years and now students can take admission into Design, MA, and MBA programs at IITs. This widening in the scope of education offered at IITs has, in turn, benefited students from the Commerce, Arts, and Humanities streams, who can now look to India's most revered institutes for their higher education.

Bachelor of Design (BDes) at IITs
Bachelor of Design (BDes) is a four-year undergraduate programme that teaches the fundamentals of design principles, images, photography etc. BDes programmes are designed to promote visualisation and creativity in an individual by promoting a candidate to ideate and, often, think unconventionally. It is one of the courses that can be pursued after 12th in Commerce or Humanities.

While there are four* institutes accepting a BDes admission via UCEED, candidates from Commerce, Arts and Humanities background are eligible to apply for the following three.

BDes Admission at IITs
BDes admissions at IITs are done via the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED). UCEED is a national-level design entry exam conducted by IIT Bombay. The exam covers the following subjects:
- Visualisation and Spatial Ability
- Observation and Design Sensitivity
- Analytical and Logical Reasoning
- Design Thinking and Problem Solving
- Language and Creativity
- Environmental and Social Awareness
BDes Eligibility Criteria at IITs
Candidates must ensure that they fulfil the following eligibility criteria for UCEED before they apply.
- The candidate must not be older than 24 years
- The candidate must have completed class 12th from a recognized board
- The candidate must have completed class 12th in the same year or previous year as the year of taking UCEED (i.e. if a candidate appears for UCEED in 2023, he/she should have qualified class 12th in 2022 or 2023).

Master of Design (MDes) at IITs
Master of Design (M.Des) is a 2-year postgraduate programme that trains students in various specialisations of design. There are many aspirants to IITs MDes course with a Commerce or Arts background.
While there are many colleges offering MDes in India, admission to IITs MDes programmes is coveted by many design aspirants and their popularity is at par with the programmes offered in National Institutes of Fashion Technology and National Institutes of Design.

Currently, there are six participating institutes that accept admissions through CEED into their designing courses.

MDes Eligibility Criteria at IITs
The following eligibility criteria for admission into MDes at IITs need to be fulfilled before a candidate can apply.
- The candidate must have completed a degree/diploma/post-graduate programme of at least 3 years duration. Colleges may specify the specialisation of the said programme according to the MDes specialisation you wish to go for.
- Candidates who have passed the GD Arts Diploma Programme are also considered eligible for taking the CEED examination.

The Common Entrance Exam for Design (CEED) is the entrance exam for MDes admissions at IIT. Some colleges other than IITs accepting CEED score for admission include:

Master of Arts (MA) at IITs
Master of Arts (MA) is a 2-year postgraduate programme offered in several different specializations including Languages, Social Work, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Geography etc. Since it is a postgraduate programme, the curriculum and subjects are completely dependent on the specialisation one opts for.
Since MA is one of the most popular choices of postgraduate courses among Arts and Humanities students, there are many colleges offering MA courses in India. However, there are only a few IITs offering MA programmes in India.

MBA from IITs
In the past couple of decades, many IITs started offering Masters of Business Administration (MBA) programmes. This was good news for BTech graduates as BTech + MBA was a popular specialisation in the market and its graduates were demanding higher salaries compared to their peers who opted to go for other post-graduate courses such as MTech.
These management courses offered by IITs fast started getting the attention of graduates from other disciplines as well and now these have become some of the most popular management programmes in India and have started getting the attention of the candidates who usually aspire to get admission into the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
However, this was not that surprising as IITs have a global reputation for maintaining a world-class standard of education, research and infrastructure and IITs graduates can be found holding top positions in some of the most powerful companies and organisations of the world.
